Stock SJ in surf?

How well would a stock SJ handle jumping around in some medium sized surf? Waves around here rarely get much bigger than 6 ft.

Also, does anyone know if it's even possible to register a new SJ in New Jersey? I guess the first question is irrelevant if that's not possible...

It all depends on the surf.our gulf surf at 6' is stacked with 3' in between, so stock is pretty terrible. However, clean surf doesn't need much power, and it's more like carrying momentum like a dirt bike.

My main worry was that something would break, like the hull or the pole. Is that not likely in 6' surf?

The breaks where you can ride around here are pretty good. Clean sets rolling through without little or no chop in between, it's just not big very often.

The hull can break if you crash it into the bottom, or the side of you fail barrel rolls, but they hold up well to normal abuse. You can reinforce them when you start getting crazy. The poles do break, but they take normal abuse, and can be protected with limiting ropes and etc. aftermarket poles can be pricey but are easy to install.

I would be much more concerned about breaking the spark than the b1 or sj.

you'll be fine on a stock superjet... do yourself a favor though and install at least one bilge pump, some type of hood strap setup, and front and rear tow loops. brapp!

I thought the new ones had a bilge already? Do you mean replace it or install a second one?

Its a syphon and its not nearly good enough. It takes forever to clear the water out. Talk to @OCD Solutions. He has a nice switch and wiring harness for sale to install your bilge(s) straight into the E-box. It only took me about 30 minutes to install mine and I was a dummy about it. My 2013 has stress cracks in the hull after minor flatwater riding though so you might want to just reinforce from the get go. Ya know what, just forget it all and spend the $$$ on a barely used aftermarket ski. There was a footrocket on here a little while back for like 10K. That's way more ski for not much more money.

The stock bilge is a syhon style and only displaces water when your moving.
Take the needed precautions for when things go bad cus eventually they will.
For example, without hood straps, you flop off a wave and the hood shifts sideways which it will as the superjet hood lip design isnt great. Next thing you know here comes the next wave and your bilge fills up. Now with no bilge pump to pump it out, your motor ingests water or stalls and your stuck in the break. (This is how skis with no foam sink) Now you need the tow loops to hopefully quickly hook up to a buddy and get out of dodge.

I'll definitely try to at least do the safety mods before taking it out in the surf, and maybe look for a shop that can reinforce the hull.

Do SuperJets ever come with a warranty? The nearest dealer lists a 5 year warranty on their SuperJet page, but I'm not sure if that's a mistake that was only meant to be included with WaveRunners...

Its a mistake. They definitely don't have a warrantee. So when your paint starts cracking a week into riding and you worry that your hull is falling apart and you go back and say WTF, they will politely say "that's what you get for buying something without a warrantee you moron. Thanks for your cash! What's that? you aren't at this dealership to buy more Yamaha crap? Ok then take a hike pal and never call us with any of your BS again. We missed customer service day during our training so now we have an excuse to be rude. Sure you can call Yamaha directly, they will just be even more rude." which they will be.

Dont get lured into the trap of experience riders telling you that you need a ton of stuff. I have been riding my superjet for 4 years and have not reinforced the pole base, reinforced the sides of the engine compartment, i dont have hood straps and i dont have a pole limited rope. I have certainly been told many times that i mist absolutely have that stuff thouh. I have back issues so i dont go big, i dont invert. I mostly surf the surf when we have it, nothing big, things just havent gone well for me.

Those mods are very important if you have that riding style, so plan to do them eventually if you want to ride like that, but a lot of riding can be done without them.

No reason to go straight from the showroom to the mechanic is all im saying.

@Mr_Bucket, where in SJ are you? I am in Cape MAy Court House, I tend to ride out either Cape May inlet, Herefords inlet in NWW, or Corsons inlet. can get your ski set up with the required surf mods and show you the ropes.

Thanks, I'll definitely get in touch if I find something to buy. I'm in Avalon and usually stick to that area since I don't know anyone and I'm just riding the fat couches my family has. I don't have anything to compare it to, but I think the sandbar in Townsends Inlet is pretty good. It'll break if there are any waves around, unless they're tiny and it's high tide.

Is Corsons better? I've seen some videos of people jumping blasters and SJs there. Never see any of those at Townsends...

Corsons is ok, I really prefer riding out of cape may, but fun can be had everywhere. If your looking for a solid ski I have a ready to ride freshly built AM ski for sale.
