Superfreak length?

So I've pulled the trigger on a carbon superfreak badass. I've had a lot of time on waveblaster785 and buckwilds -2 freaks. I want to go shorter, I was thinking -4.3 but I have a few people suggesting I go shorter. I primarily chase boats and can get a bit choppy at times so I don't want to be limited there. Anyone with a shorter freak have any input?

i've had -4.3 & -5. not near short enough since these ride so flat. those other guys get huge boats so a short hull isnt necessary. the smaller the boat/wake , the shorter the freak needs to be or the bigger the motor needs to be. 3' or bigger wake/wave and you should have no problem flipping a -5 with a beefy 701. 3' and bigger, you can do huge 701 rolls. any freak other than the circus and forget flat water tricks

I have a -4.3 with a 900R bpiped and it's great for big boat wake flips. Minus 7 would be a little easier to flip smaller boat wakes like medium sized. It would be more fun flatwater too. How it handles "a bit choppy" it may slow you down a little bit.

I don't personally think the length you take off will make that much difference when it comes to flipping. The average boat where you ride is bigger than a huge boat to most of these guys. I do however think that you will notice the length difference at speed. Unlike a lot of other people who chase boats, we are chasing them at speed. That means you need to regularly maintain 3/4 throttle. Big difference over waiting for a boat in a no wake zone or the like.

I regularly flip my ski with no trim, and a 785 off boat wakes in our area. I've flipped my -2 off Bucky's jet boat with trim. I think -4.3 is just fine. You're currently rocking a 701 and that's plenty to flip a freak off a boat wake, and nothing rolls easier than a freak. I don't feel that my -2 holds me back from any tricks, it handles great in the surf as well, though I think it flips a little too fast since I've yet to learn to slow them down effectively. That being said I've not started under flips and think that the length could be a factor there.

I vote -4.3 and maybe add some rocker. You are the best glass guy I know, you could easily shorten it if you wanted in the future.

@BrightE's how's your -7 treating you? Would you get a different length if you were to do it over again?

And what kind of riding do you do? That is the biggest concern for the OP. Between wind chop and boat traffic we almost never get to chase a boat in calm conditions. Keep in mind our idea of chasing a boat is riding at 30+ mph for miles, not hitting it once and quitting.

For what it is worth, I ride a -7" Badass and think it is the most ideal length for a rec rider leaning freestyle. I had a 701 in it all summer long that let me launch and rock pretty hard. I was getting about 1/2 to 3/4 around attempting back flips in flat water (didn't have the balls nor skill to try any off boat wakes), and it stays steady enough for what I need in boat chasing. It even handled surprisingly well out on Lake Michigan in some heavy chop - not that way a superjet or -2 Freak would, but the sacrifice in hull length I think was right for me.

Bare in mind I only weight 155 pounds too, so a heavier rider might feel differently.

Here are two shots of my first ride on the thing this July.

I'm 215 so that's part of my concern with going too short.

I own a -10 carbon badass on a bigger lake and primarily chase boats, it's rough 90 percent of the time. I think -10 is the perfect length, rides great in all conditions and I don't feel left out on flat water days with buddy's.

Never rode a -7 but all -2 to,-5 that I've rode feel way too long

I'm 6'3" 225lbs btw

We also never ever ever ride flatwater though. It's not even in our mindset to care to try lol. We usually never see glass and when there's so many 50ft boats making wakes for us we just chase.

Any vids of you riding on some chop?

I understand there is no perfect setup for all conditions. And I understand that a longer hull is more stable but less playfull and a short hull is more playfull but less stable at speed. Where we ride even a calm day can be choppy with boat wakes bouncing of the shorelines, so that is something that I have to take into consideration. I have to be able to chase a 50' boat at 30 kts. I will becoming off of a -3 square nose that suits my needs now. I know I can run a long plate or cut the hull shorter as I get comfortable on the new ski but I'd rather get it right first. Thanks for th replies so far.
