Superjet Hitch Hauler

I kind of bogarted this idea from Greenhulk but I think it is going to turn out pretty cool so I wanted to post it here. It is admittedly not the most robust setup but I needed some way to transport the SJ from my house to the launch and other short trips.

I got this steel crate hauler at Tractor supply. The width of the frame exactly fits the chines on the SJ. (cost 40 dollars)

I found a piece of treated lumber behind my pole building and got a 12 foot piece of scrap marine carpet for free from my local marina. (cost 0 dollars)

I'm going to bolt the wood in with 6 inch countersunk galvanized carriage bolts and then staple the carpet. (total cost 10 dollars)

I will probably have it complete this weekend. I will post some more pics if anyone is interested.

Not bad for a hitch hauler for about 50 bucks.

Not to knock your project, because I like creative repurposing of things, but Id be concerned about putting my ski on that thing. Doesnt seem like there is much support for the bunks or good reinforcement for tie down positions, and Im not even sure you'll be able to fit a ski on that with how close the rail will be to your bumper. I hope you prove me wrong though!

I can provide the link to greenhulk if you guys want to see it. The original inventor of this project carried his 2013 SJ on 50 mile plus trips with no issues. He ratchet strapped it to his jeep to take some of the load off.

On my 1/4 mile trips to the launch and just on short distances, I'm not worried at all

Would I take it on a several hundred mile trip or interstate? Probably not.

When the guy on green hulk did it there was no weight rating on the device. Now it says 250 lb weight limit. I think if you ratchet strap it to the truck or jeep to take off some of the weight you would be fine.

How thick are those cross bars? I'd reinforce those before adding on the bunks.

Hitch hauler worked great. Took the ski to the launch. I was nervous the whole time

I definitely wouldn't take this on long trips but it should do fine to the launch and back.

I used this same design to haul around my SJ on the back of my Tundra. Ive been using it for over a year now and it works great. The bunks sit at around 17 inches apart from each other so the ski does sit a little off centered and sat up on the bumper. I used it like that for a few months but then a buddy of mine said he would help me out. Took a cut off wheel and a welder moved the bracket forward so they sat at 12" apart. Painted it and its been working great. REALLY cheap and I back it straight into FRESH water frequently. I have beach cart for the ocean ride. Yes, be careful when diving down the highway, bumpy roads or over rail road crossings. I got this as a temporary solution but i have been using it with out doubt for over a year now. No rust either..

my carriers have been engineered to carry up to 700lbs of tongue weight and tow up to 6500lbs ( pull) . 8 years+ now of building them and not a single issue. Here is a pic of a customer that regularly tows his 24" HTM triple axle trailer from Temecula CA to Lake havasu. ( 4 hr trip)

When you are not towing behind it you can do other kool tricks like this lol ( works great for SUVs to keep fuel out of interior)

DO NOT USE THIS !! it is rated at 250lbs (STATIC capacity "stationary" ) That is like 100lbs of DYNAMIC (" motion") capacity .... UNLESS OF COURSE YOU WANT YOUR PRETTY SKI SLIDING ACROSS AN INTERSTATE! CMON GUYS .. I make a carrier for as little as 185.00 that WILL NOT BREAK PERIOD.

I made the same carrier with the Tractor Supply bracket almost a year ago. It has probably 500 miles on it by now, some of which is at 70 mph. No issues so far. No bending, doesn't flex, rattle or show any signs of failure yet. I got thru the spacing issue by laying the 2x4s down. Works perfectly.

5lbs of sh*t in a 1lb bag .. it will work ...UNTIL it DOESN'T.. (same same as a bald tire will eventually blow) . IM just saying most of our skis are worth a 200.00 purchase of a REAL carrier that wont fail. but to each his own.
