Piston wash is how the burn on the top of the piston looks. The examples are in the picture I posted above, because your piston is completely black that is telling us your jetting is lean for the pipe and head you have on there. Add in some wide open throttle runs and you melted her down. You need a rebuild and jetting change or it will happen again. The ski shuts off like you describe, most likely because it is seizing that piston. Its hard to start because the starter motor is working hard to turn the motor over with a melted piston.
