Superjet Porpoise with video link

So, first off, I have done searching and have found some seemingly helpful advice on how to reduce porpoising on a superjet.

Now, with that said, I am still having issues with this phenomenon.

Some details - I am very new to riding stand ups and have about 4 hours in the tray. This is also my first post on this forum. So, whadduuup!

Now back to business. It's a modified 1996 (bored, high comp head, different prop, prot-tec ext. ride plate which has small crack, pro-tec intake grate, sponsons, scupper, shortened pole, a very terrible custom paint job and more) and may have water logged gunwhale foam.

Here's a link to the video I made to show examples of what I mean. It seems the "turn into it and gas it" works ok to a certain point but eventually it gets bouncy-er than some big t**ties.

Any advice is appreciated. Specifically, does anyone think hull extensions would help?

Also, I'm in Michigan around Grand Rapids, so hit me up if you wanna ride.

Thanks,
Jake

You need to put more weight on your forward foot and get lower in the tray if you want to go fast without porpoising. The turn trick makes your weight shift forward so you don't porpoise momentarily. More tray time will help. Try crouching lower while putting your weight as far forward as possible.

Pole is shortened - unsure of how much though. Being 210 doesn't help me much either I suppose. Tray time has seemed to improve it. Gotta try more of a crouch I guess. Lotsa weight forward already.

You guys ever get a rediculous leg fatigue from leaning on your front (left in my case) side?

I've never noticed any specific leg fatigue, only entire body fatigue lol. That said after riding a season you'll notice a significant reduction in overall fatigue and be able to ride considerably longer.

Welcome to the sport and the X.

Mike

Ps. Can we see this crack in the rideplate, it could be a source of porpoising depending on location and size.

Keep alternating your feet. That will help quite a bit.

My pole is shortened-4.5"
I weigh 260 and can't porpoise without trying. Keep riding, you'll figure it out

I'll get a pic of the crack asap. I'm considering water dogs hull extensions - but I'm gonna keep at it for a bit first. Just wanna go fast and carve so I hope I can get this bounce under control.

Thanks for all the support so far though!

This is exactly the advice you need to follow. Crouch lower, put more weight over the intake grate (forward foot) and use your back foot for stabilization. Yes, your leg will get tired, and when it does, switch your feet and learn to ride both ways.

BTW- you're doing really well for just 4hrs in the tray.

I'm doing the exact same thing on my superjet. I rode a ton on Sunday twards the end of the day it was doing it less. Try to stay loose let the boat do its thing. Try not to fight the boat you won't tire as fast.

I wouldn't hesitate to look for something in the ski that might cause it. Or ride another ski that you know doesn't porpoise. I thought I needed more "tray time" until my ski was finished being built. Now that I have my ski, I know that my friends ski has an issue...

It could be argued that you didn't put any more tray time in your friends ski. Both the ski, and the rider are causes for porpoising. When its a new rider, the odds go up. I think that is all dmpus was saying lol.

No what I'm saying is I have very little tray time......one ski porpoises and one does not. Since everyone is suggesting tray time I figured I would suggest something different. Something I have experienced first hand. My ski is fine.....no questions about it. My friends ski porpoises. No questions about it.....

Since everyone is saying the same thing I figured I would state the obvious. RIDE ANOTHER SKI. eliminate the variable. That's how I found out my tray time had nothing to do with it.

I had a seasoned rider on my superjet 96 62t unknown prop jet dynamics scoop grate and a worx ride plate. No tubbies. He was ripping Buoys like it was his ski. No issues with porpoising. It's me making it do that. Hell the other day I was doing it on my x2. For me it comes and goes.

Good you have eliminated the variable and found out it was you. I have eliminated my variable and found out it was the ski. Now the OP should eliminate a variable so he can decide what his issue is

I have yet to get a pic of the crack - it's pretty small though. Anyway, I would like to ride someone else's ski but have yet to find anyone that has one - who I know in any way.

Any michiganders here? Any good forums for people who live in michigan with standups?
