The use of anything other than a Air Box in the surf is useless in my opinion. Having run pod filters quickly lets you know that they will not prevent water entering the carbie. Running a OEM style air box is a far better option for the surf freerider.
I took a close look at a factory air box and realised they are also flawed. Once the water breaches the box, there is nowhere for the water to go other than straight down the throat. The factory bases are shaped in a way to make this path for the water unrestricted . The other issue I saw was it was not suited to other carbs.
CONCEPT:
To take a 20 year old product, re-design it to suit the modern surf rider, and make it fit all the other carbs on the market.
Simple fit up via a hose clamp will now see the big 48mm and upwards carbs no longer sucking down the sea water.
DESIGN:
The basic design of the top of a 61x air box didn't really need changing, a few mods were made internally to it. The base is where the changes needed to be made. The base, apart from being able to hose clamp on to the carb, need to stop water flow down its centre. Hence what I call a dam wall was put around the throat. It is 20mm tall and has drain holes placed around its perimeter to drain excess water. The based is angled in a way that if water does breach the intake opening, it will quickly exit from the way it came in. I also utilised the dome shaped micro ss mesh used as a flame arrestor, in a way that it also will deflect water away from entering the motor.
WHY SINGLE:
A few reasons why I wanted to go a single type Air Box, apart from being able now to fit single, double and triple based motors, im a firm believer that each carb should have its own air box. The dual OEM style air box with a large air intake angle down in front of the motor, facing the hull, is open for water to enter in a roll over, and then there is a unrestricted path into the motor. Having the single Air Box with the entry over the head, makes for water to enter so much harder. .
BLING:
For this brand new 701 inspired Surf Air Box, it is available in six colours. RED, BLUE , BLACK , GREEN , YELLOW and ORANGE . The adaptors if required for Mikuni carbs come in Black or Maroon.
HOW MUCH:
These are due out the 16th of January and if you pre order up until the 15th of Jan, the freight is at a huge discount. Price per Surf Air Box is $89.00 AUD each. The Adaptors including SS bolts are $18.00 for one, $30 for two, and $40.00 for the triple.
