Surf Backflip Motivation Thread

Alright guys, as most of us on the X have been dreaming, I have long been seeking the ability/nuts to backflip. I know my ski is capable, it's just a matter of my mental state. I can stab, corkscrew (3/4 - full rotation stab), and cleanly roll and ride out. My last frontier (as far as amateur aerial stunts are concerned) is the backflip. What have you all done to overcome the fear of just throwing yourself back and pulling it off? I've dabbled with trying some half assed back flop attempts, but never committed. I know some guys put flourescent tape on the underside of their helmet visors among other tricks to help, but I'm looking for some other mental tips. I have no excuses for the area I ride. When the surf is good, it's more than flippable. So...What gave you the courage to just huck it on your first attempt?

I posted this for motivation. I know the most obvious answer is "nut up", but I'm looking for any tips to get me to commit. I'll update the thread on my progress (hopefully).

Find a wave and don't look back. After the first attempt when your balls drop it's nothing all you gotta do is time the wave pull back and look back and of course don't let go!!

I'm only a Rockie my self but that's my experience

Yes making sure it is deep enough is most important, and hold on no matter what! Hitting the wave just before it breaks, keep your eyes open.

Trent, you can do this ! ... I've seen you ride, it's time to go for it ! When approaching the wave block out the negative thoughts by counting to three and then say to yourself do it ! My first SJ flip I ran into white water just as the wave broke, pulled trim and hucked it around and nosed in. With trim you don't go high while learning and thus less impact.Helps to have a D cut ride plate for added flickability. It gonna happen soon because you want this. We become what we think about. Go for it bud !

Full throttle. Pin it to win it as soon as you get close to the wave. Head back off the lip and chuck it. It's easier than learning to roll. Just more of a mental thing.

im still learning them... but what i found was if try your first 1 it pumps you up so then you go on to try several more in quick succession and you may or may not land them but it dosnt mater because now you no you can work towards perfecting the timing. timing and speed is what will make it happen 4 you, you want to go slow and punch the gas as the wave is breaking.
the only time i got hurt was on a 8foot wave, i was going to fast and the wave was no way near breaking but from that experience i now no to flip within my capability's .cheers

The best way to get past the butterflies is to ride with a bunch of guys who are already flipping. The more you hang with them the more you'll feel like a pu$$y if you don't nut up and try it! (Trust me, this works!) Second is, failure builds confidence- just try it and crash a few times. It doesn't really hurt that bad to pancake from 10' up, as long as your all geared up and you DONT LET GO. BTW Did I mention to NOT LET GO? No matter how bad you're going to land- upside down with ski straight on top of you, DON'T let go. NOT letting go will ensure that you'll be around to try it again after you shake it off from your last pancake.

Wait for the wave to be almost breaking. Best wave to flip/rotate you while learning is a wave that you wouldn't hit for anything else but a flip. Basically when it's too late for a re-entry or roll etc. you can still flip it. You will blast your face with water and you won't get as much height or distance but it'll rotate you the quickest and it'll be like landing on pillows. After a couple of those I'd say hit it with more speed, more throttle and more confidence and just throw your head back and pull

I definitely agree with the whole "ride with guys that are already flipping" statement. When I was in Daytona, I wanted to try so F'in bad with everyone flipping around me...until I lawn darted my ski Thursday and split the nose open. Then I was spooked with the shallows the rest of the weekend (and I went on to snap my pole the next day - not a great confidence booster haha). Loving the advice here guys!

When learning flips, get off the ski first and make sure the water depth is over your head where the waves are breaking. Doesn't need to be much deeper than that.

I like to kick the ski away in the air off a jump and pencil into the water feet first. If it's over chest deep it's game on.

Certified depth tester. At your service.

Would be cool to put a ruler/tape measure decal on the bottom of your ski, staring at the nose with feet and inches on it, all the way to the rear of the ski.

This way, when you hit bottom in shallow water, people on the beach can see how deep it is based on the bottom of your ski!

Its a rough pic, but you get the idea! stream-gauging-station.jpg
