never let go benny, if the ski gets ripped out of your hands thats when you let go.
safe from what? if you lose the ski in waves like that, you better have your buddies close by ready to help you save the ski.

OK....I have to ask.

At which point you let go?
Would holding your ski with waves that big be hazardous?

Perhaps I can answer my own question.

Based on my experience the ski has more buoyancy than you.
That means if you are getting worked on, your ski will remain in front of you as it's being pushed by the whitewash.....right?
So it is safe to assume you would be safe.....right?

As Stanton said, you never let go. If it gets ripped out of your hands, that is when you let go.

In my experience, when your are getting pummeled in the waves, the handle pole fully extends and the ski remains over your head.

Safe from getting hit by the ski.
I have been hit by a surfboard before and it is Gnarly.
I imagine a 300 pound missile will cause major damage.

why we wear helmets buddy.
staying low in the tray and try to keep your feet locked in always helped me.

If you loose your ski from getting balled up in the white water it is usually about 20 ft from you. Good luck swimming through that stuff with a vest and helmet on. Let that happen to you once and for some reason you grip gets a little better the next time you know it is going to happen. Last year I had a real bad one in some big conditions. If it were not for enzo helping me retrieve my ski who knows what would have happened. This last trip I got tossed around for what felt like forever. If I would have gotten separated from the ski I would have been done for the day. After that I was too beat to play on the outside set. I just started playing on the inside.

Right.

I lost...."ehem"....I let my ski go 2 times last ride at Pismo when it was big.
The first time I panicked and sort of relax my body and embrace for impact.
But the ski was like 30 feet away from me. Same the second time.
I have never ridden surf that big before and never let go of my ski either.

Rookie move....:jester:

p.s: BTW, I rolled sideways each time I lost it.
