SURF VS. FLATWATER SKI??

What are the main differences between a surf and flatwater ski? I've been away from the sport for a few years, and things have definitely changed. Now I'm looking to re-enter the game and possibly a A/M hull. I spent many years riding basic modded SJs, jumping boat waves, open ocean, lakes, but minimal big surf. I'm now pushing 50 years old, 6'3", 250lbs, in good shape and want to do the same type of riding but with a little more power and potentially less weight. Any help in understanding the differences and what I might want if buying a A/M hull is appreciated.

There's a lot of differences in the 2. Mainly length, thickness of lay up, depth of chines and room in the trays. A comfy hull to ride all day is a surf or " freeride " hull. IMO a fw ski truly needs to be all out and done correct with a 900-1200cc motor to have a proper setup.

I have been on a Rickter edge since they came out, I love mine I ride it some days for over 10hrs! I only ride surf and chase big boats with it. Can do it all in them conditions with just a 701 in it.

Great post, thanks. Does your state title show the manufacturer as "Rickter"? Wondering how to avoid a potential clone (fake).

The clones are not out in that much of a bulk you'll be able to tell, rickter has HIN numbers on them. There's no title or paper work, I don't even register my ski. Just ride dirty. They don't care in MD that much, worst case is a fine or warning.

I ride a superjet. Ive rode a solid handful of am hulls. AM hulls are designed to help you get inverted and are challenging as hell. Its like a different sport.

On my superjet i have to be careful not to lean forward too much that my nose clips sand and i eat poop. Then i ride local am hulls and i have to retrain myself to remember to lean forward as hard as i can so the ski can simply plane out.

That said my fav am hull would be a Vision hull. Id like to have one someday but i prefere to not live in a cardboard box

I appreciate the discussion (I had the same questions). I'm pretty much in the same boat. Stepped away from the sport for 20 years and I feel like I don't know anything now! :)

20 years. Damn Has it changed in just the last 5. There is some straight crap hulls out there as well as some real sick riding ones. Try before you buy I recommend strongly.
155 pump and tunnel is the way of the future. Keep that in mind.
