SXR 800 broken rod

Here is the leftovers of my TBM Limited SXR after the back cylinder rod let go. Not sure of the cause but there was enought pressure or impact to push the spark plug out of the head when it happened. Final tally: broke rod/bent crank, destroyed V Force reed cage and petals, chipped piston, broken sleeve, destroyed cases, and the pain in the butt and wallet of rebuilding. Currently piecing together a new engine.

Yeah I did that same thing once. The rod sawed the engine in half taking out the starter and bed plate as well. Funny thing was it still ran on the front cylinder! But lucky for me it was just a kaw 650...

Dam that sucks.
How many hrs on the crank?
How fast/rpms were you going when it let go?

Yamanube- most stock 750/800 will last forever but once you start modding & breaking7200 rpm's alot it produces more wear & more break

It let go when I gave it a quick burst at full throttle. I am not sure what the ski was running for RPMs with the TBM setup. It has a TBM Head, Domes, and B pipe, V force reeds with angled spacers, Tau Ceti FAs, slight timing advance (no other engine mods) other then carb jetting. It was the orginal 05' crank and probably had 35-45 hours.

Ran it 32:1 (Kawalube) with 92 octane.

Mine continued to run on the front cylinder too. I thought at first it hit the overheat switch (does the SXR even have one?) or that I sucked something up in the pump, or that one of the plug wires came off. The last thing on my mind was the engine eating itself. What a surprise to pull the hood and see crankcase chunks all over. Once I got to shore though it would not start again (I had to try after seeing the damage, I figured it could not hurt anything worse).

It put a good gouge in the bed plate too.

Somebody once argued me that Kawasaki 750/800s are in fact not grenades and do not normally lunch cases and other parts when they blow, I showed him a handfull of threads like this but was still "wrong"......shows what I know. Sucks about your motor.

Doing some quick searching on here this seems to occur more often then one would think with almost identical outcomes. I least I have the trusty Yamaha 701 to fall back on.

If you try to rebuild it with those cases make sure that you do a leak down test before starting and after it has ran for a few minutes.

I had a Kawi that blew a hole in the case like that I had the piece welded back in and rebuilt the motor. It was mostly stock but it kept eating pistons. The cases were warped from the pressure of the impact and would develop an air leak after about 20 minuted of riding. It took me 2 rebuilds to find the problem.

Send it to SBT, they'll weld that back up for ya.

There was so many little pieces of case it was like a bomb went off. Thus the "grenade" expression. Definately just going with new cases and working from there up.

Looks like it may have had slight water ingesstion. I have ended up with many Yam 62T motors this way too. Not a Kawi only thing. I was going to be ordering V force 2 reeds soon, If you want I can order for a tripple and sell you 1.

Thanks for the offer. I already ordered and received two new ones. Sure would be nice if they sold them in singles. At least I have a spare now.

Good, foggy and wet. We are comfortable in our new digs and have welcomed baby number two (a little girl) to the family. Got to ride the surf a few times this year and am looking forward to this summer for some more. There are quite a few lakes in the area to for a quick day ride when the urge hits.

Definately miss hitting up the General with you guys though. One of these times when work sends me that way I will have to try and make a run with you all. I could always just guard the gas cans!

Hope all is well in the 615.

Come on down to the 615 anytime and we will find you a ski to whore out for a day. Give RD a call, he might have something you need to get that SXR back going again. Congrats on the newest arrival !

This ought to make you feel better. This was my friend's old 88 650 SX engine that let go. It took out the starter and almost punched a hole in the bottom of the ski.
