Other SXR Vs SJ: Lake riding

I am fortunate enough to have both an SXR and a SJ. I love them both but for very different reasons. The SXR is good for hauling a$$ and carving on flat water. I have no interest in flatwater freestyle so my SXR is the ticket on flatwater. I live at the beach however and in the surf I only ride my SJ. If I had to choose between the two, I'd have only the SJ, its the most versatel of the two.

Both are fun skis! I have had both an sxr and a superjet... I rode the sxr for a year then switched to a 2008 superjet... I did this because i ride surf and the superjet feels all around better in surf.. the nose is a bit higher up and less prone to nose diving... and it is much more maneuverable... As for having the sxr control you... I think it is really easy to control an sxr (look at avatar)... and i am only 5'6"... It is all about personal preference... but the nice thing about a 2008+ superjet is it has built in sponsons so it actually carves better than a sxr in my opinion...

From what I'm aware, "chine" is when the ski 'walks' or wobbles, primarily at higher speeds. I think you should worry a bit more about tuning and hook-up (intake grate and prop) before you so some hull mods.

That being said, let's hit Boyd Friday. High is supposed to be just around 70.

FX1. The SJs ive ridden felt huge and heavy in comparison, cant even imagine an SXR. Although i would like to get a chance to ride an SXR to see how they handle.

Sxrs kind of remind me of myold 750 just bigger they do corner better but for all around riding the SJ has to be the choice sooo much lighter and like anything you can get used to the way it rides. I know alot of people will speak highly about tubbies, I am not as big of a fan. Just ride........

Sorry but every time somebody starts talking about how proud they are of their fx1 I picture some guy waxing and detailing his t-top pinto gettin ready for the drive-in.

:icon16: Some pintos are pretty impressive

FX1=SJ - extra weight
Same motor, all fiberglass, pretty nimble. Seems pretty win-win once you swap out the tiny pump. Whats not to like??

That is very nice. Dont get me wrong, a couple of guys I ride with have fx1's and they go big and I am sure you do too. Crackin up. A friend growing up had a pinto and it was our TJ ride. We took that thing to TJ mexico about a hundred times and she never failed. Thanks.

I have all SXR-s. I am looking to add 08+ SJ to the fleet. The sxr tears up the chop, but the sj (pre 08) will never handle like an sxr. If you wanna freestyle go sj. If you want BOTH....go 08+ sj. If you want handling and racing, go SXR. I want 08+ SJ...its a bad to the bone hull.

I know it's work and money, but how does a shortened (-2 to -5) 96 to 07 with destroyers handle compared to an 08 and up? In surf I would think a tad more fun to ride waves due to the shorter length, but with the tubbies too. Probably be more fun in flatwater too. Any thoughts?

Not the same.
The 08 hooks up and rails much harder than the shortened, tubbie'd pre-08.

I mean, who gets a stand up to be the fastest jetski on the lake? Standups are all about just rippin the lake up in your own style.
IMO the SXR feels big, but handles nice, but would take a superjet anyday for the in-between factor where its alot easier to throw around and about 80lbs lighter.

Roughly, your body wight, under 210 sj. Over 210 sxr. From all the guys I've see and talked to.
The 08 and up is deff way tighter than pre 08. it is really hard to get the back of the ski loose, so it is all about your riding style. Do you like your ski to be a little looser or a little tighter? It just take hours on the water. All the guys that came up riding SN and Rn and just LOVED them, they mostly prefer them to the 08, But for some of the guys that were always looking for a little more, they seem to like the 08.

It's easy to bust the rear of the 08+ sj loose just like any other ski. The 08+ sj is just as nimble and good for freestyle/freeride as the old round nose, but it has the capability to carve harder when you'd like to.

the 08+ SJ can carve as well as a SXR. That is not saying it does. The SXR is a really easy ski to ride. Taking high speed turns on the SXR is really easy. On a race course, this is really a huge plus for it. The 08 SJ is the opposite. To make it turn as well as the SXR you have to really work it, you have to ride it really agressive. The more agressive you ride it, the better it turns. But it is still very nimble, that is why there is more effort envolved. I can slam turns on an 08, but it wears me out whereas the SXR does not take nearly the effort on the same types of turns.

I have the identical superjet as yours. Mine was stock when I bought it. An extended ride plate and a scoop grate made a night and difference in handling. Much more fun to ride.

Stick with the superjet, better jumper/ joy ride around the lake type of ski.

Also, im 6'3" and about 230 so we are close in size. The riude plate really helped keep the noise down!
