SXR with broken motor worth buying?

Hi kinda new to the site just trying to get some info from people who have experience with this. It's a 06 it threw a rod I don't have any photos of the engine bay yet. It does have some mods intake grate, ride plate, different handle bars, and a spring block. Just looking for info on how much would it cost to repair it myself, or what are my options for a bolt in replacement maybe something bigger?. He wants $2000 for it.

I would not do it. Thrown Rod is am engine replacement, unless you can somehow Verify it did not punch through the Cases. You are literally buying a Hull, Handel pole, and pump, with Electronics that you can not verify work. Consider you have to replace the whole motor without having a Good Core. 1k for the motor and then Core charges. You could try to find one I do know of a 860 Stroker for sale for 2500.00 and a Komander big bore 840 for 2800.00. I see no less than needing to spend 3k just to get it running.. I would be out. you have pic of the engine Bay? that may explain the price?

2k is a great deal for that if the hull is clean. put a big pin 750 in it and have 5 less hp or put a tripple in it. dont pass on it cause sxr hulls are rare as hens teeth! i'd put the 750 in it since you can find 750 sitdowns for $500. you could part it out and make money on the 2k.

^^Just about any^^ really and those can be picked up relatively Cheap. If the carbs are working on the motor thats in there would be Fairly easy to replace. I do not know that you would get your 2k back if you had to part it out, but I do not part skis. I guess its a matter of how much work do you want to do. Try to get more intel...

Should note that just about any Small pin Single carb 750 engine in that ski with the Stock SXR exhaust would produce around 55HP. Duel Keihin SP/BP carb motor will be around 64, and a Mikuni Duel carb motor around 74HP give or take..

I found a guy who is selling a 650 SX would that bolt right in?

buy it.you can find a good deal on a motor down the road and for all you know it may not need much to run again.check it out closely .

a broke buddy of mine bought an sxr hull ,put a 750 in it, blew it up and put a 650 in it with the sxr dry pipe. it actually went pretty good with the 650.

The guy who is selling the motor is checking out how much it would be to ship to me. Has a 38mm carb. Do you know if it bolts right in or do I have to buy spacers or anything?

Not a great deal, but a fair deal.

If the rod damaged the case or sleeves but not the cylinder, I am to understand you can put the cylinder and electronics on a 750bp case. That is what I would do.

this is true, the rod almost always takes out the Cylinder "If you are Me" most everyone else get lucky. And the reverse is true as well If the Cylinder, sleeves, pistons, head are good. you can replace the Case and Crank with a 750 lower half. they are Identical I believe. and you should be able to run the electronics (provided they are good) that are in the SXI. Just need to verify the Taper, and timing of a 750 Crank.

I always assume the worse case scenario. I've been lucky on eBay with like new motors for $700. I'd buy it. 750's are much cheaper, comparably, to the SXR engines. Output is perhaps a little less, but whatever mods you can do to SXR can also be applied to 750 engines.
