Tachs for tuning

I'm probably going to get the PET-2100 DX tach. I just wondered if there were any different brands and who is using what. I read somewhere people where using tiny tachs but the were pretty much useless.

My carb showed up today. Looking to get a tach.... probably pick one up one from watcon. Just curious to see what everyone else is using.

the commercial ver of the tiny tach is less than half the price and reads 2 times a sec,and records max rpm as well the consumer ver tiny tach reads once every 2 secs.

Pet-2100

I offer only the newest in PET-2100 & 2500 Series. The PET tachometers hava a sampling rate of 20 times per second. 2x per second is good for a lawn mower, not so good for a highly tuned watercraft engine & a savvy tuner!

I do like the larger lcd display of the PET tach but at four times the price can you actually see a difference between 2.5 times per second and 20 time per second?

Most people wouldn't be able to release the throttle that fast.

Yes there is a difference

An experienced tuner can utilize the quick tachometer input, and tune accordingly.. I'm not talking about the difference between getting on a plane or not being able to leave the line without laoding up.. I'm referring to the difference between 7560 & 7580 Rpm. If you are serious about tuning then it's worth the expense.

I realize most readers here dont care about peak rpm, but when is your motor most productive and efficient? Of course the answer is when it's tuned correctly..

The Tiny-Tach commercial version updates every 500 milliseconds for $65.00 and the PET-Tach supposablely updates every 50 milliseconds for $200.00

I agree with the tuning part but is the 450 millisecond cycle time advantage worth four times the price, because most people won't even be able to react that fast.

I've used both and when i got to use the PET-Tach i realized how hard it was with the tiny tach and why did I even bother. To me the tiny-tach was like tunning in dim light and wondering if my results were even valid. The PET-tach is no guess and it gives you a visual of how fast your engine revs to that point of where its fighting for that last rpm. I guess I'll have to buy one instead of using Joey's. And there is a difference between peak sustained and just momentary peak rpm.

SportTACH
The Sport TACH is designed specifically for the watercraft and snowmobile power sports market and is fully water tight. Its advanced design includes a large, easy to read LCD display and connections for up to three EGT probes. The EGT probes can be used to measure cylinder exhaust temperature up to 1600º F, or water and air temperature from 32ºF. The SportTACH has many unique features including time-of-day clock, trip timer and total engine hour timer. Settable alarms are provided to warn you when EGTs go out of range, or vehicle battery is low. Unique data logging memory records maximum values such as RPM and EGT temperatures from the last six runs. The data of each run is time-of-day stamped so you know which data is related to which run. Optional thermocouple probes These long-life probes are designed to withstand the harsh conditions in the engine's exhaust ports. The thermocouples can measure fast changing temperatures found in the engine. The thermocouples have long leads and water-tight connectors for attachment to the SportTACH.
