I love my dual digital MSD TL... I was a charging aluminum flywheel enhancer boyee for a long time!!! :cheer:
J/k, seriously...
I ride flatwater 99.9% of the time and I was looking for the most bang for the buck ignition that my budget would allow. I waited, searched and found a used TL that was 3 years old but only was used for half of a race season and had been sitting on a shelf ever since..
I paid $500 for it and it was mounted on a alum board ready to go. I just had to come up with a starter solenoid. It came with 2 new extra coils and 2 new pick ups. I ran it all last summer(5 months solid) with no probs whatsoever and can get 3 tanks through too before it needs charged. I use a Lynn Vick Power source battery. It's been very reliable, time will tell..but i did set it up right and take care to dry out everything. My brain box even had some salt water corrosion on it. He said he ran it in some surf races with no probs. But that was racing not freeriding.. even though it's still brutal charging WFO jumping through the waves, etc.
I think like someone mentioned earlier.. If they are set up correctly and precautions taken, like the wires from the pickup sealed down to the stator and also the wires coming out of the coils sealed up and using die electric grease on connections and good grounds, etc. they can be real reliable.
If a bendix comes apart or something else happens, it could trash your flywheel. If you have a alum charging f/w its going to cost 3-400 bucks to replace with just a good used one. You can find used mint MSD flywheels going for $50-100.. Not to mention the stator could be trahsed too. Thats expensive to repair/replace vs. 1 $50 MSD pickup coil..
You can run a bigger gap with the huge spark it makes and when you ingest big water, the big spark starts it right up with a couple plugs of the primer. Where I know OEM spark takes WAY longer to get it going, wearing down your starter, bendix, battery, etc...
Not to mention the programmable timing, thats a given... Being able to run a REAL aggressive advance on bottom/mid and then taper it on top for pump gas is a real bonus if you want or WFO timing for full race gas/ported setups. Whatever you want!
I was expecting more bang for my buck when i bought my first enhancer. At the time I already had a alum charging f/w and a OEM CDI w/ Pro-tec rev limiter mod. I was just expecting more, thats all. With this set up its the alum charging f/w that kicks ass. The "enchancer" is just a little bonus...
The enhancer is a puss on the timing curve if you ask me. They could of made it way better, BUT they made it just a hair better than stock, just to say its better and then the masses would buy it because it says MSD on it and it has a more aggressive timing curve.. I guess maybe it has more spark too, but I know its nothing like the TL spark from those single big ass towers!
I always take the hood off after i ride and get the water out of the hull and have a fan that I use to dry everything out overnight. Plus its alway hot and dry in Havasu... so everything drys out real quick. Prolly good for the old MSD TL.
I too will never go back to anything else on my main flatwater lake ski.
If I lived by the ocean and rode surf mostly I would have enchancer and alum charging flywheel on my main ski.
My square surf boat/guest ski has OEM ignition..
Anyways, my .02 worth of thoughts and experiences with ignitions. I'm sorry, I didnt mean to hijack this thead too.
