Anybody able to weigh in on how much better the Solas MAG stator is over a TBM pump stuffer? I am looking to upgrade my pump and my options are the Solas MAG and a used TBM at about half the price. Is it worth it for me to pay a little more than twice as much for a Solas MAG when I have a limited budget and also want to get a bored nozzle to go with it.

(I already have a hooker 9/15 to go in as well)

Thanks to everyone who takes the time.

Cheers!

I realize that but was more curious by how much. Is it enough of a difference to justify twice the cost to me.

I ride in the great lakes, not big surf but sometimes choppy, sometimes flat, once in a while we get biggish waves.

TBM supercone is around $400

MAG stator section around $500

No brainer

TBM super cone = sprinkle pixie dust in your pump

SOLAS OR MAG = power/hook up gains

If you can get a used TBM with all 3 cones cheap, that may be the better option. The mag does work better, but it depends on your funds. I went from a TBM to a Skat Mag and noticed the most difference in white water. It wasn't worth the 1K I spent on it. All of that was before the solas came out. My 2 cents.

And I hope to get the Mag eventually but trying to keep my spending under control while I pay for my divorce so I need to budget and stick with it. That really means either the Solas mag and the prop I already bought or the TBM, the prop a bored nozzle and a new battery and lightened flywheel. For roughly equal money.

I had an R&D stuffer with a hooker 9/15 and loved....instant, noticeable improvement in hook up. Upgraded to a solas mag and noticed an increase in thrust, but a loss in low end. I ended up getting the stubby cone and it brought the low end back. I also had to use some washers/spacers to get the hooker prop to not bottom .out. ....i wouldn't say the mag pump was double the output, but it is definitely better all the way around. If you're on a budget i would go with the tbm and a bored nozzle, esp at the used prices.

I like the R&D Afterburner. I paid a good price and I couldn't be happier. If I had a mag pump give to me I would swap, I run a 9/15 hooker as well. The aspect I love of the afterburner is the instant pressurization of the pump, or the snappiness of it. I can agree that your not getting close to mag characteristics or even going in the same direction with the stuffer, but I was pleased with the OEM pump to begin with, just wanted it to be quicker. The stuffer takes out the pump lag, and that's about it, which is great IMO.

I run a plastic nozzle also. I'm too cheap to bore my 61X nozzle, besides my warped plastic nozzle is 83.5x87mm, lol. Also make sure your stators in the nozzle line up with the ones in the pump too when you bolt it together.

There is no way I would pay $400 for a stuffer. That's like paying $600 for a used B pipe. It's just one of those things I refuse to accept though it happens all the time.
