Freestyle Teaching people to ride standups

Location

Hey guys,

I was curious...how exactly do you teach your friends to ride?
i taught a bunch of people to ride standups and they all LOVE it now...but the girls....they seem to suck so horribly...

so far 3/4 of the girls i taught, have floored the ski, locked up, screamed, and headed towards an object at almost top speed.

i always emphasize what to do if you are out of control. LET go of throttle or fall off....

luckily nobody has crashed, but it's always ridiculous.
Im actually hesitant on teach anybody anymore for fear of them just hurting themselves, someone else, and losing my ski as well.

girls tend to be the only ones to lock up from what i've seen anymore.
do you guys just not teach the girls?

I have had good luck here...taught many....girls always seem to do better IMO....I had a young kid run my brand new 99 Sxi pro in to some rocks once.

I didn't let it bother me and I still teach pepes to ride. I just try to make sure nothing or no one is around and the water is flat.

Funny, all of the girls we have taught to ride usually do WAY better than the guys. When I taught my girl, she was standing and turning her first day out. My roommate's girl tried riding for the first time on Saturday and was standing on her second attempt.

The dudes we have tried to teach....not so much. Half of them still have yet to stand up.

i think you guys are right, the girls pick it up faster ive noticed, but they seem to go into panic mode if they floor it...i haven't noticed any guys doing that.
thats the part that worries me.

I taught 2 guys that are both over 40 to ride this weekend. Neither had ever ridden a stand up , but had been skiing and wakeboarding plenty, both loved it. They were standing in the tray by 100 yards. Of course this is on an SXR, I'm sure a SJ would be a different story.

I still can't get my wife to even try it.

They have a lower center of gravity and typically less in weight which helps.
Some girls can be top heavy because they're carrying around a couple of large flotation devices.

If you tell them to ride around kneeling in the tray it helps to get an idea of the balance needed before they start standing up.

I used to tell people to get used to it on their knees but everyone just rode kneeling until they were bleading. I think it makes them scared to stand because they feel like they are going to fall and never attempt to step up. Now I just explain how to get the ski moving and how to stand. Much better results this way.

Again the girls have done better

I've never seen a girl lock up and pin the throttle, if anything it's the opposite (being too timid and not getting enough speed to stand up and turn). I just taught a girl how to ride last weekend, I had her ride around kneeling in the tray a little bit, emphasizing getting used to the throttle - how fast it goes, the acceleration, what it does when you let off, etc. After she was comfortable with that we worked on standing up, she did great!
