The most love/hate Ski I've ever owned. So much fun to ride.. always breaking... always underperforming expectations.. But here we are version 4... still trying?

A recap of its life

Purchased Ski, bought from a buddy, he had 2 B1's purchased this one and it quickly lost all compression and he just had it sitting never messed with it again.
20230628_190014.jpg

Figured out someone did him dirty when selling to him kept their high comp head and slapped a extremely tired head gasket in there, it was what let go, simple fix.

First few rides!
20230705_205020.jpg

Runs away like a menace out of water, sometimes including in water if you rolled it, figured bad crank seals, it's also god awful slow.. will not rev out to limiter on the trailer in water.
Pulled and resealed engine, also found a shaved head on ebay! 180 PSI now.

Still super slow and sluggish. Buddy I purchased the ski from has a 9/15 Hooker stock driveline otherwise b1. It DUMPSTERS this thing. I tried what felt like everything (probably should have just bought the hooker), few different stock & Solas impellers... Rebuilt the stock exhaust, tried drying the exhaust, various electronics, feel like I tried it all.. It just still will not find RPM, just chilled in the low low 6's at best (crazy down the line this exact 701 and setup plopped in the Squarenose... worked flawlessly )

I looked and looked for a Redpipe / FPP and NOBODY would sell me one..
Decided to go Yamaha 1200, Grabbed a XL1200 locally
20230718_134814.jpg

Quickly realized it only had 5 case bolts, and a JBweld disaster, crank was hammered.. crazy this was a runner

Season was coming to a close quickly.. Finally of course found a red pipe, put that in for the time being.. Only got to ride it a few times like this but it was FUN.... but still somehow slower than my buddies.. I ran in this setup a 13/18a Solas I bought new, which was hot garbage, and still is, it's unbalanced rattles skis to pieces, and basically doesn't work. I also discovered my intake grate ripped the stock shoe and was just floating in the pump tunnel.. probably not helping.. Season was over for this ski. I wish I could have tried this setup with a new shoe, and a better impeller frankly.. It revved out...

Enter 1200 Era

XL1200 seller was very kind and hooked it up with its sister ski, this one had a melted piston.. but good cases!! and he gave me a good crank
Built 1 whole bastardized good to go 1200 and dove into the swap. Wrapped it up over winter.
This setup fell into the same curse.
First few outings it actually did really good got it up to mid50's response was junk but hey.. it was something
Setup was stock 44's ProK's
"OSIDE BILL" jetting and drilled returns (maybe where I went wrong)
Solas 15-22 Concord Big hub.. another new production junk impeller

Ski had some issues loading up, went through a few jetting instances. top speed was never as good as day 1.. response got a bit better.
One day it bogged real hard WOT.. limped it back.. It never worked again
I spent the 1-2 months going through this entire ski front to back over and over and over
I tried multiple CDI's, redid wires, tried different coils, different impellers, different pumps, replaced the midshaft housing, different stators, resealed the exhaust, redid the head gasket, you name it I did it.. switched the carbs to dual feed, redid the fuel pumps what felt like 100 times.. No matter what I did it would not rev out.
I called it here I didn't want to spend a penny more on this setup..
Some observations, I think it was the carbs.. I might of just goofed them forever with the drilled returns maybe. More on that to come. Compression never changed a bit.. but maybe I broke a lower ring? didn't seem to be the case though.
Ripped this motor out and promptly sold every 1200 Item I ever had.

I wasn't a big fan of the nose heavy triple.. (I'm still not)
So went for the rad dudes setup to get it as far back as possible
I had an 1100 sitting basically ready to go from a trade helping out a buddy when his ZXI ripped itself to shreds. I also did this swap already in my SPX.. with GREAT success so I was confident.
Decided to use the 1200's 44's leftover with a RHAAS plate, dry pipe, ada reed spacers.. Keeping it simple at start
Had my buddy who built me the 3.5" exit make me a 2.5" Exit

First outing had the 15-22 Big hub Concord from before.... and those god forsaken 44's I drilled out. And what did it do??? YOU GUESSED IT
Not rev out. It wasn't even ridable.. would not go over 25 or so MPH

I went home took the carbs out, moved it all to a virgin set (why did I not do this before)
Slapped in the biggest bored nozzle LPW has made for me
And I for some reason my great intelligence I put in that stupid 13/18a that rattles everything to pieces
But by the gods this thing was GOING to rev
And it did!! It had zero powerband anywhere.. I put 2 tanks through it just nursing it around all day I was just so ecstatic.. It had no go.. but I didn't care maybe did mid 40's with no pump pressure present

So that takes us to our current status
Ordered up a 15-19 Hooker, and did the hard timing advance, I've also gone back to a stock diameter nozzle

Ski is a monster! Finally I can ride the thing... but still one thing... you guessed it
WE NEED more RPM.. Currently my record speed 56.. which seems a little low. I need a tach as well, no idea why I keep putting it off.. but my ears work, it's not quite as high as some other's just watching videos

Added some turf, every hot start it felt like it had lost all fuel pressure and was bleeding off air.. Found a pinhole in a return line.. Scary stuff

Some suspicions / next moves
  • Top end is meh, 110-115psi, I have a fresher top end set laying around that's been dropped a little
  • It's RICH.. Like real RICH.. I've been working them in, may need to go down from 110 > 105 mains
  • High comp head
  • Vforce3's, kinda speculating the stock reeds are a bit restrictive for the 44's
  • Ride plate? will this actually help me gain some speed... not much useful data beyond handling
Better intake air routing.. it's HOT here. it doesn't necessarily get overly hot in there.. but can't hurt for a nice airdown kit
  • Solas 12v pump, I have one laying around, I'd expect that'll drop topend though, but hey some more pump pressure
  • UMI (why not)
  • Some sort of trim, I've been trying to build a manual setup out of raider nozzles, but it's meh at best I want a hand party lever
  • Rehull? Take this Cursed one and drive over it with a skidsteer?

Been there done that with a 1200 before , what I ended up finding was bad reeds, of course I found that after doing head gaskets , crankshaft seals ,pulling carbs multiple times, swapping CDI. coils and everything else I could think of, reeds looked good but leaked so badly you could feel the reversion hit you in the face when you revved the ski up.

Looks fun in the video ! Liked the story of how you got to the 1100. I would have quit with the first 1200 motor that was shot lol

A single pipe triple has very little pipe tuning effect. They need to run higher combustion temps to make full power. Thats why you cant push the compression very high. Twin cylinder with a good pipe will go rich at peak rpm if the pump load is set correctly. Thats why they are much more likely to burn a piston when overloaded.

The Blurse continues !

Engine out time once again!!

May sit for a bit while I collect parts. Definitely will do the reeds while it's out. Planning to align the pump proper this time.

Anyone got a spare B1 shaft???

Finally got parts ordered up and in. Was procrastinating for a while playing catchup with some other projects.

Went for the Raddudes cut Midshaft and a WSM driveshaft. Got it aligned alot better. Way more spline engagement though vs the old gp800(I forget) Midshaft

2 evening job. Evening #1 was just playing with new pump bearings and driveshaft install into the pump.

Tonight went from empty hull to empty bolt bin and running. Super stoked!

Probably going to store it away for winter unless someone comes scoops it away but hey parts off the tables and back where they belong.
