The "enough DVX build threads already" DVX build

While none may be interested in seeing another DVX assembled, I have decided to document this build for posterity's sake anyway. I am late to the party this year with this build, but my work schedule would not allow this to happen sooner, and really I don't have time for this now, but I am going to plug on, and try to have this thing on the water in a couple weeks.

This build started off last weekend with one last ride on my Franken-square to make sure my JM/Blue 781 is still hitting right before disassembly:

I plan to run the 781 for at least the rest of this year, and I really would like to find this hull (w/xscream pole, midshaft, and pump w/hooker) a new home when this is over. I love how this thing handles. Or I will have to give it new life at some point.

I have been getting teaser pictures from Xscream for about two weeks now, and it finally shipped out yesterday:

Right now, the kitchen table is covered in parts ready for the build that I drool over every day. I completely assembled a new 155 pump before the prop got here only to find out it wouldn't thread onto the shaft. I am working with the supplier to get a new shaft and seals, but I am not looking forward to redoing that work and just hope this doesn't delay getting the ski on the water.

So many nice DVX's went up for sale on here after I put my deposit down that I kind of regretted it for a bit, but I will really enjoy this build after the arduous adventure that my square nose was.

Things are moving forward with this build. Pump was test fit and aligned, midshaft installed, various fitting and mounts installed inside.

Turf has been and will be the most tedious part of this build. Underpadding is nearly complete now, with just a couple more pieces and final sanding left.

The Xscream o ring pump seal is a bit of a pain to assemble, but I definitely can't imagine not having a complete seal.

The pump assembly, as indicated previously, was a real issue. The whole works, minus the prop was assembled as expected. So when my brand new Skat prop arrived and wouldn't even start one thread, it was very aggravating. Being a brand new, one piece maxx pump, there was no good way to get to the threads with it assembled. After some inspection, I found some burrs on the first few threads. I ended up filing down the first two threads with some effort. The prop still wouldn't go on.

I ordered a 20 mm x 1.5 lh die and tap to see where the issue was. The die ran cleanly through the skat prop. I couldn't even get the die to the threads on the maxx shaft however. It started cutting approximately a half inch short of the threads when adjusted all the way open which obviously doesn't work. I spent a great deal of time filing down the shaft and the threads until I could pry the die open far enough to engage the threads. I alternated filing a recutting the threads many times until I was finally able to engage the prop correctly. So the shaft was lathed to the wrong diameter.

But now, I am left with a compromised shaft and probably metal shavings in the seals. I contacted Maxx when this happened, and sent several pursuant emails, but now, I haven't heard back in over a week. I asked for a new driveshaft, bearings, and seals or a credit on the pump in that amount so I could get those elsewhere. While I can run this for the month and half I have left to ride this year, this is not acceptable long term when buying brand new components:

I don't think the max pump is going to work with the Xscream oring piece cause their pump are machined down to fit that ring

I've had it together twice now... All I had to do was trim the bottom flange ears in to clear the fasteners. Xs must have modified their O ring system for standard one piece pumps because I was not given an option and I know they used a standard one piece skat to verify fit.

Ski is basically done. I would have been out riding today except the hood, which just got back from Xscream, is hitting the b-pipe after sending it back once because the modification was on the wrong side. It looks like the recess they use is too far back this time. I am going to contact them before cutting into the hood myself. My season is shortened this year because I will be out of the country the month of September so I don't want to lose another weekend. Overall, if you plan on a DVX, a bpipe isn't worth the trouble compared to a power factor one. The Ebox is really cramped, the battery is basically inaccessible except for my wife's petite hands which managed to get the battery charger hooked up, and the hood issues mentioned all add up to not being worth the headache.

Other than that, while it's not perfect, this was by far my best turf job. I've finally learned that it's all about patience patience patience. And, I found doing it in an air conditioned environment really helps manage the glue cure rate compared to previous attempts in hot, humid garages.

you are going to really enjoy this new ski. Looking good

Working seven days a week right now, I have had almost no time to ride; I have been to the beach with it three times now and have ridden twice.

The first was just a shakedown run which went well. Found it to ride excessively nose high even at any speed even leaning on the on the pole so I shorted the pole all the way down.

The second, I got to the beach, and my ebox mounts had ripped from the hull from trailer ride there. Couldn't ride in this condition. So I pulled the motor forward and reattached the ebox mounts with g-flex. I think the resin I had from my last build is past it's shelf life as the glue I cleaned off was not rock hard as one would expect.

This past weekend, I finally got to do some real riding with it. This thing is so light as to be absurd. It does not want to be in the water and responds to input like nothing else I have ridden. Moving the pole forward, however, did not solve my light nose problem. In fact, while trying to hit the set up wake with my weight all the way to the front and even pressing weight into the bars in an attempt to jump flat, I got more than half way around on a flip. It was really frustrating because I came from a pretty short hull and didn't think it would be a huge transition, and at 170, I am not above average weight. I was contemplating starting over on my footholds to get my weight up further, but I could stand with my weight all the way forward in tray, punch it, and end up with the nose pointed skyward. I started looking at my trim and nozzle, which I purchased used, only to realize that it was a 65u nozzle which has 5 degree uptilt. It was a facepalm moment, but I had never even considered that someone would want to run that much uptilt in a standup. The bore on that one seemed too large for my setup anyway. luckily, I had a 63m lying around so I modified it and swapped those out this week. I am pretty stoked to get out on the water and see how this behaves with a neutral nozzle.

Ski looks good!
I'm 6'2" tall, 160lbs and run the nozzle with 5deg uptilt aaaand run about another 5 or so deg uptilt on top of that with a welded stop on the bottom of my exit nozzle lol

Haha, maybe it's the five inches you have on me, but more likely it is that I just suck at riding this thing right now compared to one such as yourself...

I just need tray time and practice hitting my set up wake with more control over pitch so I can just jump successfully before I try some backflips(flops).
