I've been riding standups off and on since I was about 6 years old. Had a few dirt bikes and a race kart.. Motor Sports are never cheap. and typically a low ROI when you sell them off. If you really cant afford it. Don't Buy it.. A better time will come back around.. Toys and Hobbies are Fine in moderation, Just always consider what your time is also worth ( wrenching/tuning etc )
But Never lose sight of what's really important..
-Family
-Health
-Never lose your ability to save.. ( even if its very little some months, keep it going )

Glad to see your kids having a good time and enjoying the old 440' . Keep them safe and let them have at it! take lots of pictures because life goes by so fast!

Lol that damn 440 kicked my butt. Was fun to ride though. And he got a really good deal for it. Even if it didn't run. Haha

Beautyfull ski!!! I rode my first standup somewhere around 1982-1983 which was a 440 I believe. Been riding on and off ever since.

I hope you keep it just the way it is and preserve it. There are less and less old school ski's out there in good shape.

Great story and clean ski.

If I had the money to buy a nice built AM ski I wouldn't think twice as long as it made me happy. Nothing beats that smell of burnt 2 stroke oil and a day on the water.

Word. Sometimes I feel guilty about what I spend on my skis but when I'm riding I'm the happiest person in the world, so I would probably eat ramen if I had to in order to afford this

I'm going to reply to this thread in true swapmeet fashion.

My first ride was on a friend's 650. Everyone was taking turns riding it and when I got on everyone was standing at the shore waiting to laugh at me for falling off (don't lie, you love watching people learn how to ride stand ups too)

giphy.gif

but I got up right away and was able to make (wide) turns both ways without falling off. I came back and I was like

giphy.gif

when i got home I frantically searched craigslist and I found a 650, 20 minutes away for $500

giphy.gif

it was kind of ugly

giphy.gif

but i loved her and learned how to ride it

giphy.gif

but then it wasn't enough so i found a superjet in GA and bought that. i didnt get to test ride it, but the guy said it ran awesome! i got it home and it didnt run worth a crap

giphy.gif

but its ok because i can fix stuff, so i fixed it

giphy.gif

a couple years later i got bored again

giphy.gif

so I swapped my driveline into a -2 superfreak

giphy.gif

and someone offered an AKM (ak-47) in trade for my SJ hull

giphy.gif

the ak turned out to be an auto when i took it to the firing range but that's a story for another time

giphy.gif

my SF hull is now for sale, because i have the itch to rebuild

giphy.gif

i bought a 14 superjet in the meantime because i decided i like to run buoys now too, even though im awful at it

giphy.gif

and i have no idea what AM hull to get next!

giphy.gif

but whatever it ends up being...i know ill be head over heels for it...for now anyway

Alright then.

So where did I leave off. I put the SJ on craigslist and someone asked me if I would trade for an AKM.

giphy.gif

I made sure to meet him in a public parking lot etc. He seemed a little crazy, but he did say he worked for the NC Dept of Wildlife so that was legit enough for me. He was telling me about the AKM (it was all tacticool-ed out but also came with a 75 rd drum, two metal mags, two tapco mags, a different flash suppressor etc) and was like, 'yeaaaah buddy I took this thing to the pond and opened it up on some birds, it was like being in vietnam!!!'

giphy.gif

but whatever I wanted to get rid of the SJ so we did the deal. A few weeks later I stocked up on some 7.62 x 39 and went to the local indoor range (no good local outdoors). Filled up a mag, rocked and locked it into place. Pulled the trigger. Wait that kind of seemed like a three round burst or something

giphy.gif

Let's try that again. Pull trigger once...blat blat blat blat.

giphy.gif

I turn around and looked back through the glass to see all of the gun range workers looking at me

giphy.gif

I motioned for one to come in. "umm, I just got this, I don't know anything about it, I think it might be something it's not supposed to". I may have played up my feminine wiles to avoid going to federal pound me in the ass prison

giphy.gif

So the gun range guy offered to shoot it. blat blat blat blat. He said, 'ummm, sometimes some LEOs hang around here. you should probably take this home and figure out what's going on with it'

giphy.gif

I went home and disassembled and cleaned (errr like I should have done beforehand but excitement got to me) and he, or someone had installed the shepherd's hook incorrectly, so essentially nothing was catching the hammer after pulling the trigger, making it temporarily an auto.

The AK is now doing well, a good semi-auto as it should be, and has wood furniture again also.
