The Free 1989 JS550 Project Thread

Yup, the title is correct. I got a JS550 from my uncle for free, as a birthday present.

The kicker:
Motor needed rebuilt
Sat for six years
In those six years, six cats used the hydro turf as a litter box.


Current state:
Motor on a stand at a buddy of mine and Layne's house.
Fuel tank, most of the lines, fuel filter, and battery are pulled.

What it needs:
New grips
Maybe new bars
All vinyl stripped
Carb rebuild kit
Partial rebuild kit for motor
Battery
Fuel filter
Fuel lines
Hydro turf
Paint
Hull refreshed

Carb and motor rebuilds are being ordered tomorrow.
Turf, paint, bars, and grips will probably come during the winter.

Current mods:
Looks like upgraded intake and ride plate
Aftermarket bars?
Not so stock looking exhaust that I don't have pics of
Cat piss mod
Original NO FEAR sticker mod

All that said, I have some questions.

What should I do for paint?
Will the hull be fine for riding in flatwater?
Whats it worth with a freshly rebuilt motor?

If I end up putting about $300ish into it, am I ripping myself off?

Dude these 5fiddy hulls are a dime a dozen, ride like no other ski out there and are really kinda fun. I'de say your not ripping yourself off if you enjoy it and have fun buildin it and ridin it. Thats what alot of us started out with is 550's. There the cheap intro to jetskiing!! haha just have fun out there and there is alot of technical help on these things!
