Other The Idiots Guide of What Not To Do...or forget to do.

I figure that it was time to introduce an updated version of this sort of thread. So let's hear it, what have you all done this year, last year, whenever...that ended up being fit for the idiots guide. It could almost be equivalent to the Darwin Awards, the more ridiculous, the more entertaining. Allow me to start, this so far is my brilliant entry to the guide. I have been having issues with my ski since I blew my stock coil. I had most of the issues cured when I installed the new coil but still something wasn't quite right. Turned out my carbs went out of sync, so I pulled the duals and threw on the single set-up. Then the R&D flame arrestors decided it was time to rot at the bases so with nothing to put onto the single the duals are back on with the stock airbox.

This is where it gets interesting...today called up a buddy to go for a rip on a lake we only tend to visit once a year because it is about an hour and fifteen minutes drive away. He gets held up by construction on the way to meet me so I give him a hard time about it just to be a jerk lol. We finally meet up, head out and an hour later are at the lake. Unload, gear up, I tell him go ahead, you're the new one on stand-ups, you need the practice. He takes off, I fire up and start out on the water...can't get my ski past 1/3 throttle. I tried everything I could think of to dial it in. It fired up in the driveway, revved up nicely and now...nothin doin. 75 minutes drive one way, 5 minutes ride time and 45 minutes of diagnosing and trying different carb settings. Finally I give up and pull the ski from the lake after a whole beach of people anxiously awaiting to see the stand-ups take to the lake. Now we are all disappointed. My buddy and I take a break, sit around and guzzle back a Coke. I tell him I am going to try it one more time before calling it quits. We move away from the ramp into a parking lot set back in the bush and dive into the engine compartment.

We check things, we change carb settings again and again. We check things again and again. I finally notice that the pto carb is getting fuel but the mag side is dry. So I right away think aha! fuel blockage. I start to dive into the carb on the manifold and much to my surprise I find the metering diaphragm cover is loose. As I am saying to my buddy, why are these screws loose the memory comes back like a ton of bricks. They were loose because there is no diaphragm inside and the loose screws were to remind me to put it back in there. When I put the single set-up on I was going to swear off the duals as intended for some time now. So I disassembled the duals and dried them all out to prevent the diaphragms from going crusty. The single had no flame arrestor anymore since both of them are torn at the rubber base and rotten...so I had no choice. Had to go back to the twins. I get the ski back home, a 5 minute job and trip to the local ramp...boom...performs like a raped ape. My only words for myself the entire time after realizing what I had done was IDIOT! lol. How about y'all? What was your best bone head move?

Yesterday, I went to ride with some professional racers for the first time in about 10 years. I got to the lake, dipped my trailer in, and realized that I'd forgotten something. Gas, helmet, gloves, towel, shoes, tools, snacks, keys, check, check, double check. The only thing missing was my life jacket. I had to borrow one that barely fit, but that wasn't the worst of it. I then had to get towed to shore four times because my brand new pipe chamber kept separating. At first it looked like I'd cut the exhaust hose that goes to my water box too short, but eventually one of the guys suggested that I back the hose off the water box as much as possible and tighten everything back down. That fixed it but I got a couple motos in before having to pack up and meet my wife and kids for dinner.

You gotta have snacks! I typically don't but regret it after a ride when I'm totally spent and have nothing to chow on. That is an every trip occurrence for me lol. An unrelated to the sport, but related to the tread ordeal I did was a few years ago. Decided to head up to the hunt camp for the weekend, an hour and a half drive from home...not far from the lake mentioned in my previous post. I get up to where we park and unload the atvs, then it is another 45 minute trail ride into the bush. Just as I hop up onto the bike to start it, I get pawing around looking for my one and only key. Where was it...sitting on my computer desk back at home lol. A one and a half hour trip turned into four and a half...IDIOT! lol.

*Edit* This is equally important to remember when your ski uses a lanyard...don't forget it! =D

Not ski related, but 2-stroke related. Found out the hard way that a fuel petcock on my KTM 360 was backwards.... I spent well over an hour putting the petcock to ON (which was off) it would run until the carbs went dry. I thought I flooded it, so I would switch to OFF (which was on) to clear the carbs out, in reality I was loading them up. I would sswitch back to ON (which was off) and it would run until the now loaded up carbs were dry....

That was just a horrible day at the track... I just loaded up and went home out of shame after figuring that one out...

So far the worse thing this year is forgetting to put one of the spark plug wires back on before going out. Also don't leave your only bottle of drinking water in the car, in direct sunlight. Nothing like drinking some 110+ degree water when it is 100+ outside... =(

about 10 years ago, Memorial Day Weekend. I had the rubber damper take a dump, Called Tricky, he had one, 2 hour drive later, I get back, Pull the engine, install the dampner..... Go to bed, It is late at this point..... Wake up, go out to the shop and I just sit there and stare at the engine sitting on the counter............ WTF did I pull the damn engine just to change out the dampner............

when you buy a motor that looks complete, make sure the reeds werent removed. you'll end up on an 18+ hour chase with a gnarly headache wondering why your new motor wont run. youll also spend money and replace parts that arent needed.

I bought a freestyle motor off the X.
Newly rebuilt, ported motor package deal.
It quickly spit out the crank seals, about 10 hours,
so I tore it down and found mismatched cases,
crumbling epoxy and holes in the lower case.
Got some minty cases (thanks Jetmaniac), seals, gaskets and bearings and put it all back together
Finally runs strong (at least today!)

My home away from home.
Build issues I guess.

Once forgot to tighten down the carbs, got to the lake, hit the start button... BRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPP! Whooo, glad that shut down. Dumbass...

Zip tying everything up solid only to forget to hook something little up and have to cut everything and redo it all. Done that a couple times. Now I test fire everything prior to tying everything off. Late night building screwups lol!

Got stupid on flips the last couple days out. Everything is off. Put a hole through my lip 3 weeks ago but was riding good, two weeks off then gashed eyebrow screwing up and last Sat cut the bridge of my nose good on first flip attempt. Stupidstupidstupid....

Lol these are all great. Mine wasn't so bad but I felt dumb because I knew better and always do this. Bought a few skis and one of which was a mint 90 650sx with pipe and head. Beautiful sound and beautiful ski. Still had stock oil injection on ski. Took it to the lake even tho I said I'd take it off and switch to premix. Well ski ran fine. Did this one more time and ski ran great. Third time out for SOME reason the oil line breaks because so worn. Luckily I only rode on the ski for a few minutes out of a 5 hr lake day. Notice engine was weird the next day. Melted only rear ring and slight marks on the piston and wall. Slapped on extra 650 rings and will finish season out *knock on wood (have put 10+ hrs so far)

Most awkward was trying a leg drag on my buddy's (newbie) race 750sx because I was showing off. Fell hard and almost messed up my ladycatcher ha. Gave it back to him 2 seconds later with all my teeth tho
