Other The opposite switch problem

I have a '96 Yamaha WaveRaider that has a problem.

The ski will not stop running by using the stop switch or removing the lanyard and engaging the kill switch - I have to flood it to get it to stop. I have replaced the switch with a known good unit and the issue persists. The ski will not start unless the lanyard is attached.

I think this might be an issue with the CDI. Or could it be a problem with a relay or something else? How can I troubleshoot the problem since I've ruled out the swtich itself?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I have a stand up too so I'm not JUST a couch potato. :)

On a visual inspection, all wires look fine. They are still in the insulation, not corroded, and even tucked nicely away in their little protective jackets. What tests can I run to determine if it's a relay or an issue in the E-box?

Anyone?

Thanks!

Disconnect both ends of " X " wire in question, use an multi-meter set to ohms, connect the black probe from the meter to one end of the wire, red to the other end, Meter should read .000-.002 generally speaking. If thats the reading you get then while holding the probes on the ends of the wire have someone else bend the wire back and forth starting at one end and working their way down. Usually if there is a broken wire you will see the meter fluctuate and jump around. If there is any fluctuation on either wire rip the wire out and replace it, dont try to cut and splice, etc. If the wire broke in one spot chances are its broke in another or about to be. Hope that helped...

do the rpms wind up while at ide,... could be crank seals. I had that same thing happen and thats what it was on mine.

I figured it was the CDI and replaced it, same problem, ran great just wouldnt shut off. My wiring was damaged inside the handle pole just below the turn plate in my case.

Vrizi, the engine rpms don't change as per a lean condition. The ski runs normally, engine sounds normal....It just won't shut off. :)

Thanks!

also check the connections at where the switch subharness connects.in a superjet, its located on the port side of the fuel tank next to the water seperator.not sure on a couch.the contacts get corroded at the weather pack connector and doesnt send the "signal" all the way to the cdi box.just follow the harness all the way dwon and any weather pack connectors you see, just unplug them and clean thoroughly.i mean scrape em with a pick till they're shiny!hope this helps.

Ok, the plot thickens and I'm not sure if I'm dealing with one problem or two. In addition to the ski not shutting off properly, it is also not fully opening up at WOT on the water. It only revs up to about 3/4 and then sort of coughs. When it coughs you can hear the rpms pick up to the level where they should be. On the water, the ski is only running around 40 mph and should be 55 / 60. It will not maintain idle. Off the water the ski revs properly.

The carburetors were cleaned and rebuilt prior to putting it on the water this season and plugs were replaced as well. Wires and connectors have been checked / rechecked and are in good shape.

Thoughts? Is this possibly a related problem or a different one?

Thanks!
