The value of riding buddies!

Just wanted to reinforce the need for riding buddies. I was riding in a certain area with about 6 other riders. The surf was pretty rough but fun (5-10ft). I haven't ridden in about 3 weeks, did a few rolls then said he lets try a back flip and it went wrong (i think i was only riding for about 5 mins, warm up first guys...hahaha). I bailed and the ski landed upside down and running for about 30 secs. I couldn't turn in over or turn in off in time before it filled with water. I signaled for help and they swarmed like bees...good stuff. Since I had a full tank of gas and the ski was completely full of water (I have a bilge but it couldn't keep up) the ski started diving like an anchor as it was being towed (thanks for the help Steve). So we decided to tie it to the back of the ski and tow it that way. Since I have never seen my ski that underwater before, I do have to say I started to freak out because I was about to watch my baby go titanic! But Jim was there to calm me down and keep her afloat. Thanks to Jim and Scott we got me and my baby to shore and dumped the water. But not with out some damage. Cracked area where the handle pole attaches to the ski, damaged nose piece, bent turn plate (still confused about that one), ripped off my grip and throttle, lost my lanyard (which ended up in another buddies pump). All of that damage could have been avoided if I had a limiter strap which i don't (will be getting one quick). We did get it running again long enough to sink it again and I got rescued by Jim again but this time it was way less traumatic. For some reason my bilge exit tube popped off and was just recycling the water that was getting in so I hydro locked it again. I did get it running once again and flushed it with fresh water and fogged it with 2 stroke oil. So i will be spending this week sanding and glassing the ski to get it back up and ready for the weekend.

So summary of all this: Always have someone to ride with, have a limiter strap, have tow loops on both ends of your ski, have a quick connect rope about 6 ft long tied around your waist, warm up a little bit before doing something stupid.

But seriously thanks to everyone who helped my out: Scott, Jim, Steve, Idok, Cory, etc.

Sorry that happened to you Tanner. But your post was great and should be read by all who ride in the surf! Thanks for good friends.

yep we finally got some bump over here and it was breakdown after breakdown. you would think we ride a ton with all the crap going wrong. at least 3 skis have some mystery fuel restriction???

at least we rode

and thanks for all the lost ride time I and others cost those who towed us this weekend.

Thanks for the condolences but It was still fun. I learned: how to get water out of your gas tank (Scott). What to do to fog an engine (idok tip). How to do a double up on a super jet (Jim and Steve, grab the drivers vest by the shoulder and the other hand on the side rail). How to get slammed by a 10 ft wave and still hold on to your dead ski (mother nature). I already have the front of the ski empty and ready for glass.

Check the pump diaphrams for small pin holes in them... Mikuni's have a small casting flaw that cause a small pin holes...

Replace diaphram and grind down the flaw....

:shhh:

Jim and Scott are great ride buddies, maybe ole guys do rule......I had a blast riding with them in hugo.Ask Scott about the time Just us 2 went out on both his skis, ones motor craped out and the other one seized towing it in,We caught the tide lucky and had a few hour swim to get back to the launch

Saw the carnage to Tkmww's ski. He stopped at my house to fresh water rinse etc...
I only got the story, wasn't there, but alot of the damage looks like it happened during the tow-in. Tanner said that only the very stern of the ski was above the water. The ski was also being toed backwards and upside down. The pole must have come up and caught the bottom or rocks or whatever breaking the glass under the pole bracket, ripping off the grips & throttle etc...

The important thing is it's running. And that you were with a good bunch of riders,as you said. I'm sure that stand-up riding groups are tight everywhere. There are really so few, that we gotta stick together!

And, the towing backward thing; they made serious efforts to right the boat and tow it, to no avail. It was REALLY full of water and if a rope wasn't put on the stern, they might have lost it.

Last weekend 4 of us went out and I ended up towing two guys back to shore. Very rough / choppy surf. No tow rope so each rider held the front of his own ski and then held onto my foot as I hung off the back of my ski.

It sounds easy typing it here in black and white but in choppy surf it was killer. I didn't know if we were going to make it - the wavey spot at this beach is a shallow spot about 1/4 mile out. I checked the surf condition web site when I got home and it said the average wave height was 7.2 feet with 12 second interval. Two back-to-back 1/4 mile tows in 7 foot surf. I didn't want to see a jetski for a few days after that.

I kept looking back and seeing the guys head mostly underwater so I would slow down every 30 seconds to let him get a breath.

I agree, riding buddies are priceless.

Trust me...I was in the tray but the weight of the water and gas kept pulling it under. Steve realized that it might take us both down. And thanks to Dan for letting me get the fresh water rinse on my baby!

Pulling 2 guys in with your leg? Now that is tough...good job!

I've done that in a river and it was a pain...in the surf? Nutz!

I just wish I had an extra rope to tie the handlepole down. But it is better than losing he ski completely...which happened to a friend of mine. They never found the ski.

Not yet. But mine will eventually overheat. I'll get 'em back safe and immediately take an easy cruise to cool it down b4 cutting it off.
Plus, AllDayJay is always there with his sp.(not so much a couch....maybe a love seat.) And I'm sure he would have been happy to help if the stand-ups were having trouble.
Nobody gets left floatin'!

Let's hope pop-a-matic (Tanner) is up and running soon. Let us know if we can help, or if you need something!

All day jay was there...but he didn't have a wetsuit so he didn't ride till the 3rd burn. He would have been much appreciated if he was out there when I went down. Its always good to have at least one couch in the crew...they are the best tow boats...hahaha.

All I have to say is the boyz down south can't be beat! If I would have been alone I would have been totally screwed!

Don't forget OG fred (agustaf). He turns 69 tomorrow...Im not kidding! He was riding before I was born. And his brain if filled with more jetski knowledge than I could ever hope to attain.
