Other The What is your biggest Rookie move on a build.

While putting together my new ski I went around the waterbox neck and ended up rubbing my steering cable raw. A little pismo salt water and snap.PA270139.JPGPA270138.JPG

Peening ???

Peening a screw - tapping the threaded end with a peening hammer or some other semi-sharp instrument. It balloons the end out a bit and will prevent it from ever coming out.
Turns out you don't want those screws coming out. :(

I hope you guys were kidding but in case you weren't; if you don't peen your carb throttle screws they can back out and fall into the motor. you peen them by tapping the threads with a punch. It deforms the threads so they can't back out. be careful not to deform the throttle shaft.

waterbox installed backwards. did that alot.

not getting water out of the motor asap. letting it sit then destroying my cranks life.

working on a 550. pulled the hood off, dove right in and started undoing the battery. the gas fumes caught and blew up in my face while shooting me off the trailer. FOR SCIENCE.

tightening my b-pipe coupler hose clamps so the rested riiiight against the hull. then rode it for a while....

deciding id be fine without bilge pumps at todos santos..... and sinking.

trying to pry my cases apart with a flat head skrewdriver without taking the stator out and not using the "pry areas", instead, in between the cases them selves. :)

im sure ill think of more...

Big mistakes i made:

Not hooking up msd enhancer correctly, chased that problem around for a month

Not using brand new woodruf key when installing a flywheel = sheered the key, spun the flywheel and threw my timing to heck

Not making sure linkage between carbs is tight ; synching the carbs, = couldn't figre that one out for a long while

Accidentally switched the cooling and bilge lines on the pump on my girlfriends 550. This works good for removing the paint off of motors

I also tend to buy parts, sometimes not use them, sell them, and then realize i need to re-buy them later on.

A very long time ago, like 16 years ago, I did a topend job on my SXi in a hurry, hit start and revved it only to hear a very bad noise and as I hit the stop button, saw the needle bearings on the toolbox. D'oh!!!

Just pried my exhaust mani off like that, only slightly hurt the area outside the water channels. Were you able to fix the cases? Ill probably find another way to get the block, head, and cases apart.

Leaving the screw loose to tighten the throttle cable... Fell off before I even started riding, took 30 minutes to find it in the bottom of the hull and another 5 to fish it out without tools.

Plastic extension on fuel jug fell into the tank when refilling. Had to siphon the entire tank after fishing around for it.

First time I rebuilt my SJ motor I installed the rear crank seal backwards, thinking the three little tabs were spacers, I installed them facing the inner seal. After like 2 rides, the seal poped out of the cases but the motor still ran fine. I called Art from Jetworks baffeled as to what happened and he nailed the problem right off and informed me of the correct installation. Of course I had to do a whole tear down to fix it.
