Pretty cool perspective.... We get small versions here when the winds shift, I like hitting the nice peaks in the corners.

Saw it like that in the channel in Indiana Washington beach I think. Huge v wake when the lake has 3-6fters. It was only in 4ft deep water but it was flippable. Hit the lip and wabash!!! Sent you straight the f up into the air though

I'd be interested to see the underwater topography.....
If any man made grid exist or similar natural temporary sand bars.....
I suppose two nearly even in height separate swells converging on a evenly shallow patch of sea floor at right angles could temporarily cause it.

This happens somewhat frequently at our spot in NH (Hampton Beach). Occurs at the sandbar right at the end of the harbor breakwall. The area is called The Washing Machine. As stated above, its like hitting a trampoline.

Not wind, that is Long period Ground swell from two different directions, Like a south swell and a west swell hitting at the same time or two swells from opposite sides of the ocean coming together. Best swell ever as it makes crazy bowl sections that go right and left starting where the waves collide. To see it that uniform, where it actually looks like a grid is very rare. That would mean the two swells originated 90 degrees opposite and both swells have the same wave period.
