Things to do BEFORE salt water operation

There was a good thread on salt water flushing and thought it would be a good idea to make a list of ..... Things to do BEFORE for salt water operation . i really never thought about running a ski in the salt , but I found a group about 4 hours away that runs in the salt every other weekend..... so why not . I'm a particular guy when it comes to prep and have no tolerance for breaking down due to maintenance. So surf guys chim in on the little tricks that keep you running . Thanks

spray down the engine with silicone or WD40...



the maintenance comes AFTER the ride...

use "656" by CRC. Spray down the whole engine as IDOK said before you ride

hose out the engine compartment, flush the ski. store with hood off.
salt water isnt as big of a deal as many think.

then when you're done riding, spray down the motor with water (after it has cooled a little), and respray with the 656 again.

As far as salt water being a big deal...it is if your ski is a salt water virgin. just make sure your bilge wires are connected nicely, etc....u should be fine.

Lots of dielectric grease on everything, spark plugs, electrical plugs. Rebuild the electrical box and seal up the grommets and gasket with silicon. Dielectric grease on the metal parts in the stop start switch.

Take lots of bolts off and put anti seize paste on them and reassemble.

Grease on the throttle cable and steering cable ends to "seal" them up some.

Spray down everything metal with TC-9, WD40 etc.

I ride in salt 100% and have not had a salt related problem yet.

And after riding flush the engine with salt eliminator .

I ride all the time in salt just take a little more time after riding to flush everything .

and don't use wd40 it's eating the silentbloc

I don't ride much salt but before Va. last year I sprayed my entire envy with spray on wax and just left it on. Some of it is still on the ski....

I sprayed the engine with pure silicone. It seemed to work but I don't see anyone else using that in here so I'm gonna use WD this year I guess.

Thats the info I'm looking for . I was also thinking about using weather packs for all electrical connections .

i used wd40 until my entire engine compartment was disgusting and black. it also softened up the rubber and made black stuff come off of the hoses. wd40 has its uses but i wont put it on my engine no more.
now i dont run any oil and just hose it out and it hasnt changed anything, engine still looks exactly the same only now its not dirty. if you want to be meticulous use compressed air to dry off your engine. clean and dry

Gap you spark plugs tighter: .019 should do. If the plugs are not gapped tighter the engine may not rev out all the way. May also want to put a separator on you plug wires so they are not touching each other, salt is contuctant and spak energy will decrese when the plug wires are wet.

Look for electrical gremlins.

I spray my motor down with salt water, turn off the lights and fire it up...look for sparks.
Your ski might run perfect in fresh water and not run at all in the salt. It will find any small electrical issue you might have.

Then di-electric grease all your connections.

I personally recommend FLUID FILM anti corrosion spray...

That stuff is the absolute :):):):). Puts WD40 to shame. Can be a bit pricey at around $7.50 a can but it lasts forever. That stuff is used on everything from farm equipment to jetskis around here. I spray it on parts that are out in the the rain, sunshine and dirt and it holds up for quite some time.

anti-seize doesn't work in salt water...just fyi...just use marine grease. everything else he said works...again i'd say use the 656 by CRC tho.

the "salt-away" is going overboard...this is good to use before you winterize your motor if you're constantly in salt...not needed if you only ride a couple of times.

I don't know if the anti-seize lubricant works with salt water but I know things come apart easily on my ski and don't show signs of corrosion in the threads.

I've been using WD40 since I got my ski and I have not noticed any issues. How long does it take to cause a problem?

I try and put dielectric grease on all the electrical components. Coating the battery terminals, plug wires at the connection between the boot and wire, around the grommet going into the flywheel cover, starter wires etc. Anything to slow down salt water. Not sure how much it works but I feel better and I've not had an electrical issue since I got my ski in '07.
