thinks to look out for on the SXR's

Here's something we can start..
1) stock pulse line rubbing against the rear carb, between my friends and I theres 3 SXR's and all 3 are rubbing. put a shield on the pulse before it rubs a hole .
2) check for air leaks at the mating surface of the crank case. Mine was leaking. rub you fingers over it and if it's oily, it's leaking, and if your engine bed plate is shiny "not from WD-40ing your engine" it's leaking bad.
3) blown base gaskets, that's a common one.
4) Kawai's cheap battery/starter wire terminals. my SXI broke on the negitive side of the battery, and SXR on the positive side of the starter from vibrations and age, lucky the boot protect it from shorting the elec out. Replace all these terminals with heavy duty ones and you'll never have a problem again.
besides these problems it's been very good to me.

Hood latches are trouble. And oddly, my stock fuel petcok was bad from the factory. Kept me on reserve all the time. Needless to say, I swam home a number of times before I figured that one out (i didnt even know what a petcok was!!)

Oh yeh, and just do yourself a favor and apply some silicone or something to the seem on the rail caps. They suck.

And if you like to do nose stabs or barrel rolls, just do yourself a favor and replace the stock pole while it still has any value, because they are junk.

1. The hood latches suck. Front and Back. If you have good tight hood straps (I use ratchet straps) You won't break the front ones and don't even need the back one.

Question,
Are you all getting this stuff cuz you ride hard and put up wet, or is it just general wear an tear stuff. I guess im just wondering if this stuff is just bad designs. ............Obviously the hood latches are crap but all the other stuff?

The problems also vary depending on build year. I have an 05, and have noted none of the above yet. The ski has about 40 hours on it now. My friend has an 04, and he has seen the gelcoat spiderwebbing in the tray- mine has none, and I do a lot of jumping.

i have an 06 and i pulled my turf off to put in footholds and my tray was cracked. i just reinforecd it with kevlar. should be good now.

The fuel neck, where the cap screws on has cracked on mine and 2 of my buddies skis. Had all kinds of water in my tank after a few subs, the cracks were so fine that it took me forever to see em.

The carb syncronizer screw (on the inkage between the 2 carbs) will back out sometimes. I ahve seen this on a couple. It will let one carb be opened more than the otehr at idle.

my jelcoat is cracking everywhere i have an 08 and it under the hood left side rail and my handlepole bracket. its cracking by there to

Oh sheet, you have the exact same ski as me. I havent seen any cracks yet, but I havent ridden it a full season yet either. I did take it in for warranty when both the fuel and choke labels curled up, me and my buddy both sliced our big toes completely open on the aluminum backing before I got it fixed. He needed stiches!

I have an 03 and haven't really had any problems other than a broke pole. My stock rail caps lasted until Aug 07. I beat the crap out of it too. I have friends with 04's, their caps didn't make it for a whole year.
