Tried to pull off my starter this evening and this is what happened...

Is this a first??? Haha

Seen that happen many times before. Corrosion and crud around the starter nose make it hard to get the starter nose to release from the cases.

You need to pry between the cases and starter on both sides at the same time to prevent this from happening. If you pry just on one side, then pop and nose can snap off.

go OEM bro. Saving $ on that part will caost you $ in batteries and time in changing the starter frequently (unless your low compression and charging electrics). If T/L and or over 190 comp I would go OEM on the starter.
 
Use a pickle fork with electrical tape on the ends. Don't ever pry with metal against the cases. They are aluminum and any tool will be harder than them.

This has happened to me before. Put some marine grease around it before installing the new one.
