650/X-2 thoughts on 650sx?

Haven't rode my 650 ;)

Though I've never ridden anything but a 650sx and an X-2, so can't relate to other skis handling or performance.

davy where do you ride. i ride in barnegat bay as well (sorta, im north of the seaside bridge), in lavallette. i have 650 that im working on putting a 750 in. Ill finish the work when im done with the semester. you're welcome to come try the 750 after i get it dialed in. I've only rode a stock 650 (that had some engine problems so it was lacking power, even for a 650) and a stock js300. so i don't really have much experience but i can say i see what people mean about the 650 being a bit of a boat to ride around on. in the bay though it's nice. on choppy days the js style hulls just can't handle continuous 2 foot chop.

you said you're looking into a 650 with a 750 engine? are you doing the swap yourself?

I ride Barnegat light, The inlet right there. I cut across the bay its not to far from me. Ive only ridden waverunners there, never a stand up. I live in waretown on the bay. Thanks for the offer, let me know when you get it dialed in. Im around on weekends.
No, I wasnt doing the 750 swap my self. I have two skis in NY I want to look at with the conversions already done. Theres one decent deal on a superjet in jackson I might check out as well. Just trying to decide. I want to get something this weekend or next weekend. That way if it needs some work I can have it ready by memorial day.

anyone know of any videos with people surf riding a 650? I have a couple leads on a superjet I might go after. But I still wanna check out the 650 if it will suit my purpose. Thanks

I bet you could get the 650/750 for 1000 of you play your cards right. It's not too bad of a deal if everything works right. But most people on here will say buy the superjet and buy a 701 for it. If you plan on going with the SJ I'm sure you could talk him down and I would. Then more money for the 701 if you go that route

The only problem with a 650sx is that it is a 20 year old boat and often has been poorly maintained at some point in it's life. The same is true of the square nose superjet. I enjoyed my 650sx, but if I could go back in time, i would have spent the extra money on a newer boat. That's not a Superjet, not a 750SXI, not a SXR, just newer. If a 2004 650sx could be purchased in excellent condition, I may have considered one over my superjet (assuming the price was better), But there is no such thing as a 2004 650sx, thus the reason I own a superjet.

A 2000+ Superjet may cost you $2500-$3500 in good condition, but it will be newer and easier to find in good condition. The 650sx will be nearly impossible to find in good-excellent condition.

The 650sx is a fun boat. I enjoyed mine very much (1st ski, 44mm mikuni carb, ride plate, intake grate and prop) when I was riding it. But I often wasn't riding it, because it was an old worn out piece of crap that was always costing me time and money in repairs.

I like the 650sx. I'm considering pulling my X2 motor and building my 650sx. However, that's because it'll be almost all new. Even then I will still have electronics from 1994 begging for more problems.

Long story short. Buy something because it doesn't need work (much), because in the end, the amount of time the boat is ready to be ridden is the most important feature of all. I started with a 650sx and wish I hadn't, not because it was a 650sx, but because it was old and busted.

^ I agree, I don't buy any moving parts (motors, electrics, etc.) expecting them to work... too many headaches. Like he said buy something that doesn't need much work (probably going to have to pay for it) or buy something that you know will need a lot of work like a hull with no engine or electronics and then put in a new rebuilt motor with electrics from jss. might cost you a little more, but then everything is new.

50/50. One of our 650s we got for $800 and came with some a/m stuff and was perfect, didn't require anything literally and still looks great on the inside and outside. The other one we got for $300 and had been sitting in a field in wyoming and looked like :):):):), and didn't even have all the motor mounts.

I am Kawi guy but I would say get this SJ, try to knock down price or ask to buy without trailer. I rode 650SX once and didn't like it a bit and going in surf with it .... SJ local you don't have to drive far (NY) and rebuilded motor and trailer ( I don't know if you have one) . Just my 02 cents

thanks for all the help. Yeah Im going to look at the SJ hopefully saturday. Maybe he will except a deposit and I can pick it up the next weekend when i get my next pay check. Guy is real slow getting back to me with email and still yet to give me his number. so we will see.
After buying a few 550's over the years I kinda realize with these things that yes, they are old and probably going to need work. Im ok with that. I have been thinking of trading my 06 250f in towards a new or slightly used superjet. I got a Yamaha card with I think good credit from them since I made all the payments on my bike and just paid it off. But I really hate making payments, I can do it, but would rather not. we will see what happens, I swear I spend all my time on Craigslist looking for skis!
