Aren't the holes in the flywheel so that you can access the stator screws without pulling the flywheel?

On the bench maybe but it's a PITA to actually see what you are doing and make the adjustments thru the holes when the engine is still in the hull. Much easier, (if you have the tools) to pull the flywheel.

I'm gonna try it but how need to know if there are timing marks so I know when I get to 3 degrees

There is a mark on the case and a mark on the stator backing plate. Normally they are lined up but you will want to advance the plate so it is 3mm behind the case mark. I think you turn the plate counterclockwise but I will have to double check to be sure. I know it has been posted up recently with a picture to make it real easy so I'll start looking for that now.

Edit: here's good info along with a disclaimer quoted from one of the other threads;
turning stator counter clock wise advances timing, there is a tiny dot about 3/16 from the center arrow on each side that is 5 degrees...do not advance a stock cdi, with an msd enhancer you can get away with 5 degrees advance because it retards timing faster in the higher rpm...

Meanwhile, here's some good reading on the subject;

Check out this pic thread of too much advance: http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/93228-Ignition-timing

don't go more than half that distance in the pic...

Well I don't know if I should now seeing that everyone has a msd enhancer.. or do u think I should still be pretty safe I don't hit wide open every often for very long but I have people who like to "try" to ride my ski just to see how fast it is

For clarity Here is the MSD enhancer curve compared to stock CDI curve, both are at the same amount of timing in the upper rpm range.

If you aren't sure how to retune or adjust timing I would not suggest doing them yourself.

If you don't have money for the proper mods, then you won't have money for new pistons when you blow it up from doing these "free" mods wrong.

Sorry to be that guy, but you'd be better off saving up for a pipe, Ada head and a prop. Rejet accordingly and you will have a nice reliable limited boat.

Yeah and I've build ls1 race motors for cars just the 2 stroke jet ski thing I'm still learning and want to learn for personal gain :-D

Just doing motor and pump mods ATM over winter I'm gonna try to buy a eme q8 stalker hull then transfer what I got into it
