Thru-hull adhesives

What is everyone using for sealing thru hull tubes? Cooling, trim, steering, etc. I know yamaha uses like 5200 and silicone stock, which is flexible. Tom21 recommended just using thickened epoxy since that's what you use on everything else, and he said the flex is irrelevant.

Thoughts? What is everybody doing?

I got ghetto with my stock bilge and cut the hose to a short nub, capped it with a bolt and a hoseclamp :)
For a scupper, someone recommended some cool looking expandible plugs to insert from the inside.

*Oh if you are still using them this wont help hahaha. Thought u meant sealing ones that arent in use.

I'm talking about when installing new thru hull tubes and sealing old ones up after the hull is cut open, etc. Not plugging tubes. For my trim tube that won't be of any use for a while tho, I'll be using one of those expandable plugs.

I like thickened epoxy and a layer of glass or carbon wrapped over the joint area. Or any methacrylate adhesive like plexus is just as good if not better. Dont forget to scuff both pieces to be bonded and clean with acetone.

So when you drill holes for a stainless cooling tube, you put thickened epoxy in/around where it punctures the hull and put glass right over that?

Let the 5200 set up----- that cooling line isn't going anywhere. Then, if you need to reconfigure, you can reuse your plumbing.
I know, that's what I've been thinking. I was planning on using 5200 for sealing up and installing thru-hull tubes, but then tom21 said that I might as well use thickened epoxy. Does 5200 have amazing bonding characteristics?

I wouldnt go as far as to epoxy the cooling tubes, theyre not under stress. Yeah 5200 is nasty sticky. I tore a few gloves putting it in my round nose.

Hit the aluminum or stainless tubes (whichever you got) and the hull with some sandpaper before you put the 5200 on. Make sure you acetone the smc/fiberglass always before you sand it though. Or you could push grease and dirty further into the laminate and lessen mechanical bonds through adhesives

Brian does the plexus adhere to the PVC pipe well too? I was thinking of securing mine with G/Flex.

Is Plexus how you're sealing hull halves together as well?

i used pex for my second cooling line and attempted to seal the line both in the engine compartment and underneath with fast dry 5200 and it didnt hold up.. im pretty sure it leaked and saturated the foam too
