The main thing to watch for 2 stroke oils is if they meet the twc-3(ashless) standard which means they burn clean and can be used in non powervalved motors and outboards. If its api-tc, then its a low ash 2 stroke oil meant for powervalved engines and other engines that aren't watercooled.
Ive ran a lot of oils: Mobil 1 mx2t, amsoil hp injector, amsoil interceptor, west marine twc3 oil, pennzoil syn blend, and yamagoo and I havent' noticed a difference besides a big price difference. Ive stuck with the pennzoil synthetic blend because not only is it cheap for the price, but it certifys that it is a twc 3 oil. For the record, amsoil does not certify their oils because they won't put the money out for testing.
Don't forget a lot of these so called full synthetics aren't all ester based(group v oils true synthetics), some use group III(hydrocracked, fake synthetic), which doesn't matter much difference performance wise in a stock to limited motor. Kinda makes you wonder where the 30-40/gallon price tag came from?
You have to wonder how often have you heard of an oil related problem in a 2 stroke assuming you add the correct mixture and get the right certified motor oil for that engine? Rarely ever.
Bottom line: I can get pennzoil syn blend for 10 bucks a gallon, would cost me 40 bucks in oil for a season if I did four gallons. If I were to get amsoil interceptor or any other oil at the $30/gallon, that would take me to 120 bucks per year. Im spending 90 dollars more on oil that could easily save me money in the run and won't make a difference in longevity of the motor.
Adding to this: Luke(aka icerocket1986) had his sxr ran for over 2 seasons raced and rode at high rpms all day(at least 300 hours on the machine) and used regular old west marine 2 stroke oil(the cheapest stuff you can get). His machine runs like brand new, and he only got a new top end this year due to having so many hours on the machine, but he could have probably got another season out of the motor.
