time to talk about oil.

The Good Old Days
I have been running Amsoil for years and never had a problem.
I used Interceptor in my power valve motor (GPR), never had any gunk build up or a valve drop.
I recently changed to Dominator in my square and it made a nice difference.
No more black sludge on the hull under the exhaust outlet.

Until Amsoil lets me down I will keep using it.

Damn:bigeyes: You call that economical? I get Quicksilver for about $11 a gallon at West Marine because I work there over the summers.

Right now I'm running Klotz Castor Benol because a buddy of mine hooked me up for $15 a gallon. I love the smell and all and it's great oil, but if I have to pay more than $20 a gallon for oil then I'll just go back to quicksilver which I know is good oil.
I wish someone would hook me up with that price, lucky bugger.

I mix castor 927 with the $5/gallon tech2000 walmart oil.

I use whichever I have handy, or mix them occasionally.

never had an oil related problem.

im of the thought that the cheap oil that meets the TWI or TCI whatever SAE requirement is good enough.

I just like the 927 oil.

Thats what I was thinking about doing.

I was thinking about doing 3 parts Quiksilver for the corosive protection and 1 part Castor for the smell. Not sure if you can do that or not though.:dunno:

My boats are living breathing proof that YES, you can mix them.

I am going to call BS on that. I get it at cost and paid around 3 times that much. 15bucks for a pint maybe:biggrin:

If you truely got that big of a discount then Im sorry,,but I cant buy it that cheap

I PROMISE you that I paid that much. At the time I had no idea what the stuff was supposed to cost, but I knew the fellow board member was hooking me up. It wasn't until I started doing some researching recently to buy some more(My buddy is all out now) that I realized exactly how good of a deal that was.

I feel bad he gave it to me so cheap. I'm hoping he reads this post cuz I definitely owe him a case of beer.

I definitely wasn't Bull $hitting you.

Now that I see how much that stuff really costs I won't be buying anymore of it(At least while I'm a poor college student) and I'll just stick with Quicksilver with maybe a little Castor in there for smell.

Well, I must be the odd one out then. I use whatever oil I can find at the local service station when I buy my fuel. Any 2-stroke oil does the job for me. I mix it with different brands all the time and I've never had a drama.

My ski is heavily ported, runs 185psi, and pulls 7200rpm all day when I'm racing and I can safely say that I haven't had any adverse effects from using cheap oil.

2nd that.

3rd that, R-50 techniplate, you are going to get what you pay for, your not burning alot of oil in a season, its one spot i would go light on, 1 trip to a bar will cost more than a gallon of klotz, skip a night and keep the motor tight, pm me ill hook up all you x-h20/pwt members with some good prices on klotz, they have went through a few hefty price changes the last several years due to the blends going up

The main thing to watch for 2 stroke oils is if they meet the twc-3(ashless) standard which means they burn clean and can be used in non powervalved motors and outboards. If its api-tc, then its a low ash 2 stroke oil meant for powervalved engines and other engines that aren't watercooled.

Ive ran a lot of oils: Mobil 1 mx2t, amsoil hp injector, amsoil interceptor, west marine twc3 oil, pennzoil syn blend, and yamagoo and I havent' noticed a difference besides a big price difference. Ive stuck with the pennzoil synthetic blend because not only is it cheap for the price, but it certifys that it is a twc 3 oil. For the record, amsoil does not certify their oils because they won't put the money out for testing.

Don't forget a lot of these so called full synthetics aren't all ester based(group v oils true synthetics), some use group III(hydrocracked, fake synthetic), which doesn't matter much difference performance wise in a stock to limited motor. Kinda makes you wonder where the 30-40/gallon price tag came from?

You have to wonder how often have you heard of an oil related problem in a 2 stroke assuming you add the correct mixture and get the right certified motor oil for that engine? Rarely ever.

Bottom line: I can get pennzoil syn blend for 10 bucks a gallon, would cost me 40 bucks in oil for a season if I did four gallons. If I were to get amsoil interceptor or any other oil at the $30/gallon, that would take me to 120 bucks per year. Im spending 90 dollars more on oil that could easily save me money in the run and won't make a difference in longevity of the motor.

Adding to this: Luke(aka icerocket1986) had his sxr ran for over 2 seasons raced and rode at high rpms all day(at least 300 hours on the machine) and used regular old west marine 2 stroke oil(the cheapest stuff you can get). His machine runs like brand new, and he only got a new top end this year due to having so many hours on the machine, but he could have probably got another season out of the motor.

I use the Maxima Super M but have been thinking of switching to something cheaper. I did experiment with a tank of the Pennzoil Marine and couldn't stand the exhaust smell, just something about it....

Maybe it's time to try the MM Quicksilver or the Walmart SuperTech 2000 and see how it does.

only 30 bucks?!?!

I used the Penn Semi-synthetic in my 90 SN for the past two years, and see no reason to stop using it in my latest 02 RN acquisition.

The 2.5 gallon jugs are decent priced. Yes, somewhere around $30-$35.

I think the best thing is to pick a reasonable price/quality brand and stick with it, don't mix around, especially if you have injection (which I know the SJ doesn't have).
