How about modifying the oem cdi for a higher rev limit? Is that about the same as running msd?

no, modding the stock cdi only increases RPM, it does not change the timing curve at all. An msd both raises the RPM limit and changes the timing curve

Ok cool thank you. Looks like I will just get the msd. I figured I could use what I have since it's all brand new but it's 100 bucks to mod the stock one... May as well spend a couple more bills and get an msd

The MSD has a different timing curve in addition to a higher rev limiter so there's more than one benefit to upgrading. That being said, advancing the static timing by 2-3 degrees and bumping the OEM rev limiter is a pretty cheap way to gain some power if you can't afford an A/M ignition to go with your pipe.
