Top end rebuild questions

How do I know when it is time to rebuild the top end? My bone stock 2000 SJ still runs amazing (not down on power) but I don't want a piston to break and take out the entire engine, for example.
Do they typically run until they start to lose compression and power? It is not high hour (ridden a few times a year only for the past 10 years, real clean).

What is the basic process? I have new OEM pistons / rings. Have worked on a lot of 2 strokes just no ski engine work yet.
Pull the exhaust chamber and header from the engine.
Leave the carbs in place.
Can I leave the cylinder head on and pull the head/cylinder off the pistons?

So I need a base gasket and exhaust manifold gasket?
Also good practice to replace the wrist pin, bearing, shim plates next to the bearing?

Compression check and the pistons will start to get noisy. I wouldn't worry about it. The stock top end on my fx-1 lasted 24 years before I rebuilt. By then it needed a new crank as well. Do a compression test and go ride.
