SXR Tow Taps

I'm going to be spending a week on a house boat and was wondering if I would need a tow tap for my SXR 800, my mate is putting one on his sit down but I can't find any information on stand ups. Also is it a good idea to get one for when I'm being towed to the ramp by someone else's sit down as I run out of fuel a decent but haha.

Yes you should have your own emergency tow strap with you...

iam thinking no to towing the SXR around behind the boat for a week. I think most would winch it up onto the back of the house boat if it has a flat swim deck type thing out back. Iam not sure how water tight that ski is to just float over night as well. I've seen some discussion and concerns on the stability of the towed ski to track straight too

I towed a superjet 2 or 3 miles to the boat ramp and the engine got water in it from the tow...

If you were to tow it behind you would have to block of your water lines entering your engine. It cools from the water pressure your pump creates. When it's being towed it was water flowing through the pump creating a similar scenario, which in turn floods your engine.

Like @Harbor mentioned it may leak a little if it's sitting freely. Save the hassle and haul it inside/ on a swim platform.

There was a thread a while back created about a runabout bottom that was modified so you could tow a standup behind a boat without this problem. (Not sure where that went....)

This is just an all around bad idea. The cooling lines would have to be pinched off before the engine/ and exhaust. As Harbor experienced, there is a large possibility of the cooling lines building enough pressure to fill the cooling circuit and exhaust which can flowing back into the engine.

Even with that addressed, you still have the worry of it staying upright. I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing it's floating back there. You would really be putting it to the test.

Yes to the tow taps. Should be able to get something from Bunnings to do the job. Make sure you have one for each waterline in case you have dual cooling. And make sure you have some reminder system in place so you don't cook your engine by leaving them closed!

A while ago somebody had a similar towing question (how to avoid the 'ski taking on water/rolling under tow). I married up a pair of Kawasaki X2 pontoons to my Superjet and figured that with some trimming of the attachment system they would probably fit. If you can score a pair of them cheap it might be worth giving that idea a go. Be aware there would be no going back once you've started grinding!

I've been thinking about finding an inflatable boat, maybe 8' or 10'. Removing the transom & using the inflatable hull to park the Jetski in for overnight moorage or towing. The trick is finding the inflatable hull for a reasonable price.

Hey, check this inflatable kayak out. 8' long, 35" wide, supports up to 250 lbs, rolls up into a 22 lb bundle. Biggest issue I see is no real tow point. It does have 3 handles though. You could run your tow rope thru the bow handle & hook it to the jet ski bow. Then use the side handles for a strap across the ski. Seems like it would work great.
