Trailer Wire Harness question

okay so my truck didnt come with a tow package. I added a hitch and bought the plug and play light harness(twice:rant:) the style that plugs to both taillights and does not require any splicing.

it has a small black box that looks very similar in size and shape to a CDI. i have burned up two of these.

the last one burned up in march and i havent had a trailer hooked up to it since october.

i cant figure out why it is burning up the brain on them but i was wondering if anyone has tried a setup like this.

mine did that also, i just bypassed the box and ran the harness straight to the trailer, i beleave the box is to prevent the vehicle from triping a bulb out light due to the extra resistance of the trailer harness, its been finr for almost a year now

the old one i had there was no way to bypass it. it had two plugs for the tail lights, then the 4 prong plug out the other end of the box for the trailer.

the first two setups were 50 bucks each. im sick of wasting money. the lady at the trailer store told me to take it to the dealer.... i refuse to do that.

From what I understand, if you have amber rear turn signals you can wire it direct. If you have red turn signals, you have to get the $10 converter thing.
Did you make you own good ground?

the old setup did not have a wire to ground it. i think that was the problem. it was supposed to be grounded through the vehicle.

i just spent a few minutes searching some more and found this.http://www.autoanything.com/towing/75A3979A0A0.aspx
that setup is like what i had but without the box in between

EDIT: nevermind i read the directions for that one... thats the pos i had twice. it grounds itself back into the taillights, and thats where my problem is. it is overloading the box with current and melting all the insides without even having a trailer hooked up to it.
