Freestyle Trim cables - what are the options ?

Boris

The Good Old Days
I ran my cable inside a 3/8" hose (same as what I use for my cooling lines) all the way from bulkhead to the pole breather tubes. Should prevent it from getting chafed.

what kind of cable are you using?

he is using the same thrust cable we are all using, its ok but it doesnt have a stainless sheath and if your not super cafefull you wear off the gray plastic coating and it rots in half in a week. you have to route them perfect, they cant rub on anything or they are toast in a few rides

My thoughts for what its not worth-lol

I agree-put the cable in a protective hose to prevent rubbing

Keep the cable properly adjusted (they do stretch and there aint a dam thing u can do about it)

Dont pull the trim with the throttle pinned

I have Thrust trim w.Thrust cable and have had 2 cables break w/the same guy riding my ski both times. I have never broke one myself. I treat my trim like a trans on a motorcycle-ie-you can shift with the throttle wide open, but if you do it all the time you will eventually kill the gears in the trans. Blip the throttle w/pulling the trim.

Good thoughts Gil, I'm a hack noob so I didn't have the foresight to add chafe protection in the pole and near the trim tube .

So I did some calling around to check on prices for trim cables.. Terry cable was by far the cheapest. I do have one company lined up who claims that they can for sure build us a cable with a stainless cable and sheathing, but I'm waiting to hear back. They had me mail in my worn out cable to measure up and get a quote. I have a feeling they won't be cheap.
I really wish I could have all these cables lined up together to see what the difference is. There is a big difference in price on some of them, it'd be worth it if they are any good. Someone posted that the Wamiltons cable was bomber, if it is I'd be willing to pay for it. As of now, seems people are getting a season out of the cables ordered from Terry cable, so I'm going that route. I'll replace it yearly if I have to for $40. I'm hoping that if I run it through cooling line like suggested, it'll last a good while.

Anyone ever had any of these side by side for comparison?

Protec $48
Thrust $95
Blowsion $88
Wamiltons $150
Xmetal $85
Terry cable $40

addict. alot of those cables are from the same place, they just get marked up alot more by some retailers. Ive never seen a thrust cable break, they are strong and dont stretch much either.the casing could use some reinforceing though as its very hard to keep them from rubbing anywhere long term,I found a place that "said" they could do the stainless liner and cable, but they never followed through on it for me.Let us know if you have any luck with that.A stainless liner would solve most all the issues

Yeah thats why I'd really like to see them all together, I have a feeling most of them are the exact same cable.
I'll keep you guys posted on the cable I mailed off.

ADDict , Killer research , can't wait to see what the all stainless cable runs price wise and how beefy the inner wire is .

I might have to look into Terrycable for that price. The Protec cable I bought was junk. Mine lasted 2-3 months before it snapped. In comparison, my homemade cable using a tandem bike brake cable and housing has lasted twice as long and cost half as much. I don't think my tandem cable will last too much longer but basically just saying the protec cable isn't worth it.

keep in mind beyond price guys is the inner cable is one of the most important parts of the cable . If it is not made out of the right weave or material when you pull on the trim and then the power goes through the pump cheap cable are not made to withstand that pressure and high degree of angle our freestyle trims are capable of and you will get alot more stretch then you would think and the same goes for the cheap outer cable the black vinyl brake cable type they stretch as well . We have looked long and hard and we have now the best cable we could make . you do just to be careful when routing them and chaffing them . But even then i have seen chaffed up cables last for years before the housing started to push in .
also when breaking cables there is alot to do with the alignment of cables and so forth we have spent over 5 years to get where we are at today with almost no failures on cables other then wear and tear or bad installs
thrust it you wont be dissappointed at your cable life and the extra money you spend now you wont later on replacing cables

the thrust cables do really well with resistance to stretching and breaking, the internal cable is a larger diameter than any bicycle cable,it is the same type cable as a motorcycle clutch would use.If you set them up to be at full pull when the lever is about a half inch from hitting the grip, you can maintain full pull on the trim through wot absorbing any minimal stretch with the lever. When I was talking with a cable manufacturer about making a stainless liner cable,I also was thinking of trying the standard cable with 2 protective liners put over it,the single gray plastic liner shaves away way to easy, and if your using it in salt water, all it takes is a pin hole and its rotting in half in no time.
