Seems to be the Lamborghini of skis. Looks are second to none. For flatwater they seem to not pop like other purpose built freestyle skis. They have a small pump intake which could be a problem. Difficult to flatwater flip. Gomez absolutely kills on this hull in surf though.
I've only ridden them in surf and and I've only ridden both set ups with the ScottS Tubbies and they definitely aren't a lightweight ski and that is felt but the stability was great and they carve real hard like nothing else! Watching Gomez says it all when he is ripping at high speed and just lays it over like an SXR. These hulls are very natural feeling the way they ride and there's no learning curve required, just get on and rip.
The sponsons really pull the front end down and make the hull feel much heavier than it is. If we can ever get our schedules lined up, you should ride mine back to back with Scott's or Andy's. Not saying mine is better, just that it's a much different ride.
I still haven't ridden a - 4“ but the difference between full length and -2“ is huge so I can image -4“ is just that much better.
Scotts was the first -2“ and I don't believe another full length ski has been built since. Ride reports at Daytona between my full length and Scotts -2“ were night and day and a real eye opener.
Gomez on his -4" the following year was so impressive to watch but he is such a dominating rider that it's hard to say what was the hull and what was him. He impresses me regardless of what he is riding.
He did at Daytona but he was telling Scott it was pretty manageable even without them. If I remember correctly, he prefered them in smaller or chopper conditions only.
I could see that. We can get away with much smaller/shorter skis in the small choppy FL surf. The typical day in CA or the occasional big surf day here, a longer ski is helpful for the higher speeds and bigger conditions. That's why I like long and loose. Good for all conditions
I own that hull ^^and I wouldn't consider it a lightweight hull either. I do consider it indestructible though which is far more important to me than weight and it's a great surf hull.
The pro version ended up at 315lbs RTR where the ES was something like 354lbs RTR. I stripped off some unnecessary weight since the original build and even a small weight reduction makes a big difference. I could probably shed another 15-20 pounds yet but I like the RRP pole and fire extinguisher.
I only ride surf so I don't see weight as a bad thing in moderation. I love my Superfreak but am very curious how a glass Freak would handle in surf with the extra weight. If it's good I can always get a Solas Mag pump and wear ring to add about 8-10lbs down low on the hull. I really liked the Matrix and would also be curious how Boyers rides compared to the other 2 glass hulls I rode with Tubbies
I would like to try a matrix one day, always loved the look of them, I think it's the only ski I havn't tried..
hope we can meet at Daytona, there is always so many people I never get to meet up with at these events
