Trying to choose camcorder for recording from shore...

So I have been reading about what guys are using to make videos... I have to shoot from shore so I will be getting a good optical zoom and a tripod, but dont know anything about camcorder type....

From what I read Mini DV is the way to go, but those posts were about a year old... I am looking at the mini dv and can get a nice one at just over $200...

The hard drive cameras are kinda new to the market so what do you think about those? They have some with similar price and optical zoom but not sure if the quality of video will be there...

I am going to go buy something today either way...

I am looking at

JVC, Sony, and Canon.... ranging from about $200-$250

The hard drive models dont have the image quality of mini dv just yet. Just make sure you got image stabilization. Sony and Canon are good, not sure about JVC.

sony stuff has been good to me.

get one with a common threaded size lens and you can ad a 2x telephoto thingy for really distant subjects.

Mine has 37mm lens filter threads( I think thats what it is) and its a common size for filters, and adapter lenses and things for lots of still cameras too, so you have lots of options, fisheye, wide-angle, or telephoto, for realtively cheap...

Keep that Canon away from water and sand. They short them out immediately.

I still like the old Canon Analog Cameras. The digital ones always die on me (too much electronics) I won't even get a fold out screen for the same reason. I don't use tripods either, but I am not normal...

I plan on using it from shore only.... hopefully it will last a while.... I tried it out side by side with the equally priced sony and this one was just much better to navigate through the menus and the camera was over-all nicer in appearance... that was about the only things that led me to choose the canon over the sony....

I got the deal at sears- you can find it at sears.com by looking for zr-900... I was going to buy at a pawn shop or on ebay, but I wanted to have some place to go back to if something goes wrong with it... overall I would say its an awesome little camera... I will try to be careful around the water and sand.... thanks for the heads-up DJ

its kinda pricey but its worth the money, i have worked with them for about 2 years, and never had a problem with them! there awesome cameras!
you can probably pick one up on ebay for a decent price or check out a
cannon gl2.

the vx is a nice camera, and the input chips they used in it are some of the best in terms of low light performance in a cam under 20k...but you can find used fx-1's for almost the same price as a used vx nowadays and have the ability to shoot 720p hdv...but i digress, all of those options are well outside the price range in this thread...

although canon hv-30s are pretty nifty little cameras...if you can drop the $900 or so to get one...

is true, you are not normal, but thats why we like ya lol...

for me, you can't go wrong with the super8 hotness in my avy...got it for free (the best price lol)...looks like a turd, shoots like a turd, is expensive to work with, but its all artsy and stuff lol...

Chris, you are leagues and miles ahead of me!! Someday, I'll know what I'm doing! lol...

I often ride, jump out of the water and start filming. Salt water + Camera = Dead. I actually rode up the Niagara River carrying my camera in my backpack, lol...so, I guess I don't really expect them to last ;)

ya know, if you just bagged them and taped them up really well you might not run through so many cams lol...

seriously though, i have talked to alot of guys that shoot alot of motocross and most of them will wrap their cams in big freezer bags/platic, etc and tape the crap out of it to keep out all of the dust and what not...i would think the same could be applied to your wet glove problem...

oh, and i don't know what the hell im doing...but i sure have fun not knowing what im doing...er...something like that lol...
