Surfriding Turf on side rails, is it necessary?

Ok, my turf looks bad. Its tearing all over the place. Wasnt sure if i take it off and just go with the bear fiberglass hull rail is a bad idea? Ill prolly re turf it down the line sometime but dont care right now.

hahahaa, ya that was my plan. The thing is every ride it gets worse and worse. Pieces have been ripping off and a good chunk is just hanging by a thread, lol. Its also causing major awkward splashes.

only time that you should be working on problems in season is when you break down.. dont worry about looks in season, but re turf them in the winter!!!

I need to re turf my side rails. Whats the point of it? Does anyone know?
Can I just take the old one off and run it bare?

IMO The idea, other than to look cool:cool:, was for traction (for me anyways). I've always thrown a few hood tricks in my routine and it keeps my feet from slipping off the rails.

I usually keep a few tubes of superglue around and anytime the turf starts to come up more than an inch i glue it back down. imo it makes it last longer and prevents the turf from coming off more and more..

This. I just put a 1ft section on top of the rails where my feet go for riding on the hood etc.

There is a red superfreak on here (don't remember who's) that doesn't have the rails turfed at all, just painted with the body...I think it looks sweet.

I just run the OEM plastic rails, I never grab the rails so can't be bothered to turf and then fight with it to keep it glued down

If prepped properly, i don't see it peeling off. Sand it down real good with 36 grit, then add two coats of contact cement on the turf and one coat on the rails, hammer it down real good. I've seen turf peel off before on skis, and when you look underneath it, it doesn't even look like there was much glue there, or that it was sanded properly. Take your time and it'll turn out great. Also make sure to let the contact cement dry before installing the turf and between coats.

Just put a couple 18" long strips on top of the rails in the hood area for hood trick traction, other than that just go bare or with factory rub rails. IMO I wouldn't turf again.

helps with lifting and moving them around too...check whats under the turf before you remove it all the way, some ppl really scuff and prep the rails so it may look worse underneath then the actual old turf...imo
