turf padding buildup

Location

I am seeing a lot of skii's these days with the turf padding built up really tall on the back of the tray. Is there a specific purpose to this, and has anyone noticed much of a difference? I am currently getting ready to lay the padding out for my tray and was just curious. Attached are some examples. (Thanks to the people that I borrowed the pics from :))

I am riding a fiberglass titan and most always ride flatwater lakes and rivers.

Thanks.

Gives you extra control when you're riding waves. You can really push against it. Depending on placement, it can help you not slide all the way out the rear of your footholds too.

For flatwater and rec riding, try a slight wedge in your footholds. It keep you locked in better and it'll have a lot more arch support. If you notice when you ride in footholds, you tend to lift your heels up naturally when the nose is up. Having the extra support helps. You could incorporate that into a whole rear wedge if you want to. I dunno about your Titan, but my buddies Titan tray is absolutely huge, and with a front foothold as well you could make use of that wedge for cruising down the river.

Here's an example of my wedges. I cut them down more than they are in this picture so it's not so drastic of an angle. But it makes a huge difference in comfort.

Think it would be hard to throw some wedges on if you have already turfed your ski? I like the wedges in the RIPs.

nice yeah the only parts I have turfed so far is the front and side walls, I have yet to do anything with the tray area.

Super easy. Cut out where you're gonna have your wedges. And then just get some Eva foam blocks and sand and cut to desired. Hack saw by hand even works. Make them a little big so you can jam them in real tight. Ride with them and cut them as needed. They should stay in fairly well on their own and if they fall off they float. Then when you get them exactly how you like, contact cement them babies in!

Think I'm gonna have to do that on my ski, I don't feel they're tight enough right now to go inverted, haha.

With the wedges you can run your holds loose if you want and be fine. They really prevent you from falling out.

you happen to have a website you like to order those foam blocks from?

Also wondering why you guys run your diamond turf vertically and not horizontally, it seems you get better traction from running the horizontal across the tray.

I don't think it matters which way too much. Horizontal is how I did it on my old ski but my hull came with it that way. I have a place to get foam blocks, getting link in a sec. Wdk recommended it. It's inexpensive and they do custom sizes
