Other Turfing / Painting

I stripped all the old nasty turf off my hull.

I plan on painting it, too.

Does it matter if I turf it before I paint it?

It's probably a dumb question. I wouldn't think it would matter, but I'm asking in case there's really good reason that I should paint first and then turf it.

Thanks in advance. :)

The edges look cleaner if you paint first end then turf over, but I actually run a bead of silicon around the edge of the turf when I'm done so it doesn't really matter. My $0.02 would be to paint first if you aren't going to silicon, and it doesn't matter if you are.

Thanks again for the info.

I think with the way things are going to come together, I'm going to end up turfing first.

I need to get it mechanically sound before I tear it apart and do a full on job on the hull for prepping it for painting. I don't want to wait that long and ride w/o turf. lol

you have any pictures of this. id be real curious as to what it looks like. cant image its too easy to finger spread this in the peaks and valleys of the turf.

It takes some time to make it look good, but it's not hard. Run a bead in there, spread it with your finger, and use a cotton bud to clean out the grooves.

Thanks - I like it that way too. A little WD40 on your finger as you smooth the silicon in really helps too, but the cotton buds are the real time saver.

Save turf. Turf your shoes. then you can paint the ski and turf it in the right order.

...and this is what prompted me to ask the question. :) I figured it would be better... but... I'd rather ride. I've been piecing my ski together for over a year and the final part arrives TODAY. :)

It's cold now and thats kind of a bummer. But I still want to tune it and if the weather isn't to bad I'd like to ride it for a couple months before tearing the whole thing apart and making it purdy. The hull is in pretty good shape but there's still a lot of work to do.

Whats a great paint for the engine compartment?

Just go to Lowes or Home Depot for appliance epoxy. It is indeed great stuff. I painted the bottom of my hull with that too.

We tried it on two different skis and had nothing but problems. Mine I know was preped perfectly, looked awsome after I shot it, then 2 days later started getting wrinkles in it and I had to strip it off. The only place it worked good was in the engine compartment, hell it even stuck inside my battery tray that wasn't even cleaned out good. So it guess if you want it to work don't prep it, LOL. So we did another ski just thinking it was a little cool and humid on mine about 60-65, in a heated shop and had the same issues from two different people.

We should compare brands. Whatever Lowes had on the shelf wen I did mine seemed to work great. I either got lucky or I suck at prep! :cool2:
