ultimate free ride hull

If you had the chance to make the ultimate free ride hull
what would you do
How would you make it
What would you want on it

The reason i ask is i have been approaced by some body in australia wanting to do a free ride hull
they have heard about wax racing and want to get in there with a hull
they are talking about basing it around a superjet hull and asked me to do some research for them

So let me know your ideas

Wax...that sounds great. Is $$ an issue with this deal?

Strength is the main issue, but that goes without saying. I will give this some serious thought. I'm really excited to see what you come up with. I hope this project becomes a reality!

Ross its just a discussion at the moment with some guys that build carbon fibre stuff
they are asking me about a hull
Dollars not the issue at the moment just the ideas and to see what could be incorparated

Hopefully this comes together as a project
They are very smart guys
We have a round nose hull to get open to start the moulding process

Of course strength is the main concern to make sure its going to take the pouinding of the double barrel roll you guys are about to do

weight of course is another issue

what about the curve at the back to make it toll better like all the flat water free style guys have

I can't see those (specialised) flatwater hulls handling too well, last thing you want when you're trying to get out of the way of a big set is a ski that is sliding around under you.

I'd love to see something that handles slightly better than an SJ, start with an SJ hull and mould in some tubbies???

Awesome idea anyway.

i was thinking about tubbies
may make it hard to pull out of the mould
you are right about the back making it handle funny as well

The top edge of the tubbies could go right up to the bond line, eliminating any overhangs maybe??

As for construction you can't beat the lightweight hull for strength and weight, at my previous job we made a 16ft racing skiff using very similar construction, it is amazing stuff, you could lift one end of this hull with your little finger, but there was NO flex in it whatsoever, mmmm carbon :woot:

PS I might have to start work on an Aussie pole for the aussie hull. :Banane01:

I would not really worry about weight in the surf if I were building a boat. Light boats are kind of twitchey, the heavier boat would help the ski hook up and I think aid in stablity. I would not do a 100% carbon hull but more along the lines of carbon and kevlar or fiberglass version to give it a little flexablity. Tubbies would be nice as well. I'm just a flatwater guy......but that is what I would do if I built a surf boat. That is the cool thing about the surf, you don't need a high dollor boat to run well. Look at Ross C......same with Kenney, his hulls are reinforced sj hulls with varing levels of motor mods. Heavily reinforce a hull and put in like a limited motor and you will have a killer set up that should last a while.......unless your Pete :Banane09:

I have worked with fiberglass for quite a while now, and am a big believer in the stuff, vs carbon. My carbon expierience is limited, however, the flex of fiberglass is good. It allows a little give, carbon may take a larger impact but when it finally gives it splits and splinters. I'm just partial to glass, anyway.

As freestylerat said, in the surf weight is not really an issue. The Light Weight hulls that Sickerling rides are cool, but for me the price is not worth the weight diff. A well built glass ski is the way to go IMO.

As for what I would like to see: I think a round nose style SJ with a much lower center of gravity. Make the hood hug tight to the motor, possibly lower the profile of the sides. The lowered pole bracket changes the way the ski rolls and handeles, if the whole ski had a low profile/center of gravity it seems like it would also take less abuse on side landings.

I was thinking of re-shaping the rear of my ski by rolling the bottom edges. Would probably be fine in the surf, but I'm sure handeling would be significantly compromised.

I have no real issues w/ a stock/re-inforced ski in the surf....
I just want and indestuctable nose area...

my wacky idea is to have a false nose w/ a bulkead.... make the nose out of Nerf material... you will just bounce right off the bottom like hitting a big cushion...

yeah... i know it won't work :Banane01:

some Special features, www.watercraftfactory.com
I am going to say that is going to be a wicked hull.
Pics soon to be shown ! This model is inteded for Surf (Pete) abuse !

What other innovative things are out there that could be done to the hull to inspire new tricks? Look at freestyle MX, put our brains together...

I think wax wants something new to incorporate, to push the sport...what dont we like about the sj??...hmmm:dunno::dunno:

thanks guys for the ideas
i am looking to see what you would like
all i am getting is strong and weight not the issue
surley there must be more
i persoanlly want one thats light strong and still carves so when you are doing the bottom turn it rips back at you

Foot holds on the outside!! Gotta do it!!!! Instead of wings like the x-jet - foot holds on the outside.

No surf application, but might be good for flatwater.:arms:

ive always thought about some how incorporating a bicylce gyro onto a jet ski. so that you could throw bar spins and tail whips. seems like lenzi has been trying a tail whip variation for a couple years now. all he needs is a gyro and he would have it down.

a gyro on the pole now that would be interesting. It would be near impossible to make it strong enough to be effective, but think of the variations on tricks and the endless possibilities.
