could have been clearance for a trim setup if they were running single cooling.

Most likely. I’ve had some Superjets and 750s that someone clearanced the tray like that to clear the steering nozzle.

it gets very unstable at high speed......should i change the plate?

What ride plate is on it now? Since you cut a few inches off the back it's not gonna track the same as it did before. When I had my -4, rockered superjet,I found that a stock plate cut flush to the back of the ski worked best for me. Also your pole looks a little long for the ski. When you shorten the back you'll want to shorten the pole to compensate the center point.

It has a plate flush with the hull on my rickter I have it like this and it works perfectly I'm going to try another plate because it is difficult to carry it straight
