Water ingestion damage

Last winter I upgraded my engines and one had some very bad damage. It ran excellent so I was surprised when I saw the pistons. It was a GroupK 781 and it needed a bore and pistons and the pto seals were leaking.
I’ve been using Pennzoil marine but I’m wondering if there is a better oil that might stick better and prevent being washed off when water is ingested.

Your water jackets are rough. The rest of it looks normal and the bore actually very good for an old unit All crank seals will leak oil outwardly. There is some bare steel exposed in the water jacket. Aftermarket gaskets can cause it. Common TCW3 oil is designed to work in a wet environment, its good for most standups. . Straight castor may be better on cylinder walls but is much worse everywhere else.

If you want to see the difference between TCW3 oils and a top shelf synthetic, watch this video. For 7 seasons(2012-2018) I only ran Dominator. I had 1200 hours on my SXR(cracked a skirt finally) and the cylinder walls looked almost new. Very little scuff and almost zero scratches. My crank was clean, and I had a 1/8" of Amsoil at the bottom of the case when I took the engine apart. I subbed my SXR 1000s of times and had to get water out by running WFO to dry it out. Oil and gas are the most expensive part of running a ski, if you're doing it right :)

How many hours on this motor?

I agree that penzoil is crap and good oil is worth it. I do however recommend a good synthetic oil that is still tcw3 rated as well for corrosion protection like klotz skicraft. I was never a fan of the sludge that amsoil leaves behind but it does seem to be good protection according to all the diehard amsoil fans.

Take what he says with a grain of salt

...he hasn’t had a crank last more than 9 months

TCW3 is just a rating you pay to put on your product. The Amsoil is light years ahead of that. They're not paying for a downgrade.

Dominator is not meant for power valve engines(says right on bottle).....sludge is only found on those. Run Interceptor

The key here is water ingestion and it is going to wash off any oil. If you do ingest water get it cleaned out asap and fog the crap out of it. Amsoil is good oil but it isn't magic like some people believe but they have some of the best marketing. Run a good marine rated oil, try to keep the water out and fog after each day of riding.

FWIW, Ive found TCW3 to work very well in low temp engines. Its difficult to run a modified standup long enough at full power to benefit from an ester based racing oil. Maxima Super M is good for jetski use, it has a little high temp detergent and a lot of petroleum to help keep corrosion down.

Not to turn this into an oil thread, LOL. But this is exactly why Seadoo went with API-TC instead of TCW-3. I have a bunch of the old Seadoo mineral oil I run in all of my standups since I have moved onto 787 & 951's that take full synthetic API-TC.

These pics look like my cylinder after water leaked in from stripped threads on my exhaust manifold using a 61x manifold on a 62t cylinder. Not a good seal anyway and not being tight tight with a Good gasket doesn’t help. keeping the water out is most important. Oil has nothing to do with this motor!!! Super Tech or any cheap marine oil works for Me. I will spend my money elsewhere

I think what Tom is trying to point out is water damage. Lol
What would do that to the edge of the piston? This engine ran excellent before pulling. I got it used a couple months before the season ended here in Michigan.
Water leaking in makes pistons look like this. I had a exhaust manifold machined for a 62t cylinder and re time-cert to repair the threads on the cylinder also using a 62t gasket on my big bore because I learned the hard way. Not saying that’s where your leak is for sure but it is my guess.
