waterboxes - does it really matter which one?

so i was wondering.. does it really matter if you use the correct waterbox?

obvioulsy outside shape tends to suit location, but for example in a wave blaster the space is pretty big.. so could you use a waterbox from a different ski.. so long as it fits?

the function of the waterbox remains the same i believe?

interested in thoughts or reasons why this will or will not work...

Yes you can use one from a different ski ,its just a muffler some muffle better than others and some such as x metal barely can be called a muffler at all.

it seems the so called "performance" waterboxes really only change tone

I rode with a guy a while back that just removed his and plumbed straight thru. It sounded cool for less than a minute! I like my ski's quiet. well, quieter than that anyway.

i heard a squarenose or raider waterbox on its side in the rear of the blaster under the battery tray works.

im trying a tdr SN waterbox in the rear of my blaster once i get the time to get it in there.

one of the guys i ride with has the same done to one of his blasters.


i think he told me the hose fits the SN box because its the same diameter as the blaster hose

stock waterboxes are very restrictive. i think you get a bit more snap out of an aftermarket one. lets the motor rev a bit faster.

i dont know if it really gives you a ton more power. sounds cool though as long as its not ridiculously loud.

each company that sells the aftermarket units seem to make some sort of claim over better throttle response.. which does make sense if they are less restrictive, like putting a flow control valve on the stinger of your pipe (which works very very well).

i think the gain is marginal, with the main difference being a throatier tone

i like the raider water box - why under the battery tray tho?

The stock waterbox weighs 5lbs, my Jetcraft weighs 1.4. Dropping 3.5 lbs off the ski is noticeable, barely, maybe.

The audible sensation increase is more likely the reason for 'increased response', it just sounds faster.

However, dropping 3.5lbs does help when you're doing other weight loss items like a smaller battery/etc.

i agree...i used to have a tdr but switched back to an oem..it took a little while to get used to the sound..it definitely sounded faster with the tdr but i dont think it made a difference

pretty sure under the battery tray because it fits in line with the hose back there. it wont work up front because of the inlet/outlets.


ill post up a pic once i dig out some of the foam on the blaster to make it work. i started cutting away foam the other day because i am installing footstraps as well and gave up.... i helped my buddy cut footholds out of a broken hull to go in another hull instead.

better response with type 4 dry pipe, tested back to back, stock to stock with removed baffle,

well i only have the basic mods right now, scoop, grate, impellar, msd, b-pipe, flow valve,shortened hand pole and foot holds..

.. over winter my plans are, flywheel, delta v-force twos, reed spacer, smaller fuel tank, central mounted battery with gel battery, ATP custom nozzle, carbon lowered hood and nose..

.. and im looking at a FX1 to trick up....

is it possible that aftermarket waterboxes have better flowing baffles to allow water out quicker giving better throttle response while still maintaining minimal backflow into the engine at low rpms when the ski tips? hmmmm, that would be what i would be trying to achieve if i was designing a waterbox. along with a little less weight.

i would think if you are worried about weight most of the aftermarket ones are smaller therefore they hold less water inside so this would add to the lighter weight as well.
