Since l had the ski finished,l decided to throw some gas in the tank and crank her up.Boy,oh boy! (not good) Rpm's out through the ceiling.l watched the gas fill the filters, the ski started and then climb right up.l always have my thumb on the stop button and a rag to stuff, but l caught it.The motor did this about three times before backfiring (lol ears still ringing) and quiting.l pulled the plugs, pushed them back in the caps and turned it over thinking l was getting all the gas out.l let it sit about 30 min and tried it again. The last backfire pretty much took care of my hearing.Soooo,my good friend and member here, chad had some ideas to try.And before you ask the motor had stabil run thru it,l always fog the motor till it dies out and also add a small amount of oil to the cylinders before putting it up.Also,l looked everything over ,to see if any hoses were off or lose.

So,any ideas would be appreciated.

I personally believe this happens with new fuel lines with air in them if you crank it out of the water. I have been told no by motor builders but I have had it happen twice. The first time I pulled the engine apart and leak tested it and it was fine. Then I put it in the water and never had issues with it again. The second time I noticed that my carb throttle plates were not perfectly in sync and one was ever so slightly open when the other was closed. It was barely noticable but when I fixed it and put the ski in the water the problem went away.

So the first thing I think are air leak in cases or from carbs or air in fuel lines.

I agree, i have the same problem everytime I have to remove the carbs or fuel lines and write it off to a lean condition due to air. I use my primer to get at least one of the lines precharged good enoigh to run one cylinder and then fire it a couple times to get fuel flowing everywhere.

I don't normally get backfiring though unless I overprime?.?.

Yep as others have said... Too much fuel in the crankcase/exhaust from over priming will cause the backfire. Too little fuel in the lines will cause the engine to run away. Happens every time I pull a fuel line. I can understand the engine builder saying it won't do that because if everything is perfect, the engine should be able to idle in a lean condition long enough for it clean up. However, if the tuning is a little off or the idle is a little high or a little low, the engine will either die or run away. I've been calling that normal on the last 4 engines (including one kawi engine) I've owned and I've watched plenty of other people have the same issues. I just hit the stop button at the first hint of an unexpected rpm increase.

I'm going to venture a guess that you are also only priming one carb and not both as well. If I only prime one carb the backfire on the 2nd or 3rd try is almost guaranteed.

Pretty much l agree with all of you.But l did no no priming at all.l just cranked it till it started to hit.l feel like there would be enough foggin oil in the engine and oil in the cylinders to to keep it lubed until gas started to flow.l may take it down to the lake and start it there to see what happens. After that l will pull the carbs and see if there is anything going on there.

Shane,Viva (Jim C.) is a top notch guy.Glad you got that motor.

I take fuel return line loose at the carb and blow on it (blowing air into fuel tank) until only fuel comes out of the return fitting on carb. This should remove any air from system. Lake is too cold...you wanna come test it in hot tub?! :Banane35:

Mcdog told me the best tips for turfing. Patience and two coats of glue. Do one coat and wait 15-30 minutes. Do second coat and wait 15-30 minutes. Then stick it on and you're golden. Can't believe how long and how many turf jobs I screwed by not doing that but it seems so simple now and it holds up like a champ.

No No No.

Add Glue, open a beer and drink. Go add a second coat, Open another beer..................... Burp, then go take a piss then come back and start turfing!

Chad gets to move on to the next round by giving the correct advise!

Carbs had oil in them, but no gas...The new gas could not get past the oil that was in them.

Now l can't get to the lake cause of work! Got two bad days ahead. And rain on sunday.

Ride report.Got out today for the first time since my build and updates.lnstalled my other motor xs 735,different pole,an rrp,l like it set up all the way out on the nose! Thanks for talking me into that Brian! The ski handles great, turns like crazy, and the motor set up and prop from just the time that l rode it,felt right. So far,not any spray coming up over the nose. That was one thing that l had my doubts about.l wussed out today about trying too much, cause the water was 50 degrees.Overall,l'm impressed with the ski.l'm excited to see how it will do at Wavedayz.l guess that will be my next ride report. As far as a shakedown cruise, the bolt holding the steering plate got loose and that was it.Overall success.
