so apparantly weisco it is. i am new to getting someone to bore out a cylinder for me though. do i get the piston kit and take the cylinder and pistons to the machine shop and tell them to match the bore to the pistons with x amt of wall clearance? is .006'' the correct clearance for the weisco?

thanks

thanks for the pics. im pretty sure that my 650 sj has weisco pistons in it now. i did notice that there was a lot more clearance inbetween the piston and piston wall than i thought there would be. you say that i should take it to a good machine shop to get done, what questions do i need to ask when looking for the right shop? i am new to doing this, i have never done the bore/hone thing before so i need to know exactly what i should do to get this right.

ask them if they are fameliar with forged pistons , and also, ask if they need the pistons before they bore.

if they say they dont need the pistons BEFORE, then dont use them!

oh thats it? well then thats what i will do. i looked on the site, and didnt see any prices for bore, just porting. i want to port it as well, i was thinking abt the sport port template. would that be a good or bad idea. and if good, should i do that before or after i get it bored out?

good idea, easy to do too.

BEFORE you get it bored.

also, call LPW, paul is a real nice dude, and knows EVERYTHING you have asked, will ask, and havent even thought about asking.

he IS a busy man though.

alright, so sport port templates, do the porting first, then send to paul to bore to match my pistons. when paul bores it will he bevel the edges around all the ports, i have been reading that post with the piston failure, and all that talk abt chamfering has got me concerned abt doing this unless i know it will be right.

clearance for a wiseco is .004"-.005". if you send it to a shop thats not a jet ski shop to get bored make sure you chamfer the ports because 9/10 shops dont do it. if you dont youll have sharp ports and snag a ring. also if you get it bored, wash the cylinder out with soap and water so it cleans out all the grit from the bore so you dont destroy your new top end.

in my ex[perience, they need more clearance than that.

there are some OLD threads, here and on sbtyesteryear where folks discussed it, paco finn was a name I remember knowing alot about setting up wiseco bores.

Ive always used weisco and even have them bore my cylinders. They set me up perfect everytime. Never had any piston/cylinder issues. Give them a call, they will give you recommended clearances. I did run pro x pistons ONCE and had protec setup the bore which seized in about 2 minutes. Id go with weisco.
