Surfing dry suit w/built in hood 5-4-3 for really cold day in NorCal, like 45 air 45 water. I have it for surfing but have yet to wear it riding...
A straight 5mil would be like a skin diving suit, you'd be warm in a 5 mil dry suit

okay. usually worst i ride (or try to) is 55 sun and 50 water. much coller than that im usually out. we will see. ive cosidered a ry suit but i will see what the fall holds for me

I've got a 5/4 suit with 7mm boots... Actually fairly comfy in 50 degree water and 50 degree air, I've yet to test it any colder then that and not sure that I want to either!

2/3/4 John suit, 5mm booties and a stocking cap. I've ridden in 38 air/ 40's water. Also ridden in 50 air/ 34 degree water. I rarely go in over my head :) As long as you ride with some enthusiasm the only thing cold has been my fingers. I've started wearing my neoprene Duck Hunting gauntlets, my fingers have not gotten cold since.

I'm not sure what it is, but I love riding in cool weather!

There is a new Surfer neoprene called "Techno Butter" and has lots of flexibility. Not sure how it will hold up with the stresses of hanging on tight to handlebars though.

Well you mainly ride in michigan right? So if you want to ride all winter until the great lakes freeze look in to 200-300 dollar 6 and 5 mm (6-4, 5-4) or the 400 dollar range 4-3's.

Cool air and mid 60's water in late October I can handle in my oneil 3/2 and 5mm booties, but I always wish I had a thicker suit and wetsuit gloves. I'd look in to the options with built in hood. I've been researching this myself and am interested in whats out there for cold midwest great lakes riding.

thats my thoughts. im still riing like today in 65 egree water with 5 air temp and little sun in just board shorts. but id like to be a little warmer lol. i think for this year im just going with a nice 4-3 setup with 5 mil boots and gloves.

Yep go with a good 4/3 and boots. Once its too cold for that, your probably not going to want to ride anyway...lol If you really want to strech it, you can get a 1mm vest/hood combo to wear under the suit.

O'Neill Psychofreak 3 wet/dry...bad ass. Super thin. Rated to 40°. I wear one even when there is ice in the water in the spring & am still warm. I'm in Canada...and after winter the water is super cold

Extreme cold; As a past iceberg skimmer: feet 5mm, drysuit, hands are the most difficult piece, 'cause 5mm is too thick for gripping, but keeps hands warm. May be time to use 'hot hands' and a thinner glove.
But we are months away from that in the Midwest.
