What does Yamaha seal cases with?

Like the title says what does Yamaha use at the factory to seal cases?

Just curious here as I'm disassembling a npv 1200 and it looks like it's been sealed with a black rtv or something. Not sure the history on this motor so trying to see if it's been apart before.

Thanks,

Thanks but that's not what I'm looking for. I use 1211 on all my builds.

I want to know what Yamaha uses to tell if this motor I have is original or been rebuilt at some point.

They use Yamabond 4. Its grayish black, just like you described. So its probably never been open.

Now, if its a "rubbery" RTV that is on there now it should not be. Yamabond, Hondabond, 3bond 1211 all are "semi" drying. As you already know RTV should not be used for case sealant.

Also pay attention to the paint. Usually around the bolts they will be either lightly colored or they get a good dose of paint. If that has been chipped around the washers or bolt head it usually is a good indication that someone has broken the seal so to speak. Also sometimes you will see either a yellow or white paint line on each bolt and washer combination after installation, they do this as a quick telltale for techs working on warranty jobs if the customer has been digging where they ought not be and voiding their warranty.

Yamaha uses a red sealant that looks like loc-tite. It's not like 1211 or silicone. If there's black silicone someone was already in there

Yeah, I've never used Yamabond 4 but this stuff that was used looks more like black rtv now that I have the cases apart.

It looks as it was rebuilt not all that long ago and for whatever reason lost the back two crank seals and started to take its toll on the back piston.

Only reason it was caught was the seal leak was bad enough that exhaust was making it into the engine bay when ski had enough back pressure when idling.
